Default Black Brass

Ran into something new (to me) today when I was sorting brass. I dumped my bucket onto my sorting tray (aka cookie sheet) and immediately saw a black case lying there. Aha, another steel cased Russian case. I picked it up and just before I threw it in the trash, I read the head, WIN 9mm LUGER ???? , check it with a magnet, not magnetic, scraped the black with a screwdriver and was able to scrape the black off and it looks to be nickel plated underneath. Did a search on the internet, only came up with some Hornady brass that was colored black for some special promotion. It appears Winchester did the same thing at some point. First one I've seen in the many tens of thousands of cases I've handled. I posted a few pictures alongside nickel plated and normal brass cases. Think I'll set it on the shelf with the other "oddities".

IIRC W-W also sold a premium rifle ammo that had a black case. Not sure if anything current or not in that vein.

I've seen plenty of empty .22 LR brass cases that have turned black after a winter in the acid soil of New England.

At my outdoor range you can dig brass like that. They have been buried for months/years.

If it is anything like those evil "black rifles" the brass probably kills on contact when ejected.

I have a Ruger Ranch Rifle that will do that to you if you are standing on the ejection port side.

I know someone made some all black (brass and ball) 300 AAC blackout last year to be tactical, maybe these are along the same lines.

Ha! Yes and I have a Bersa Thunder UC 40 that likes to eject a random case off my forehead about every 3rd mag. Does wonders for my flinch.

I had some cases turn black like that when trying a cleaning concoction once.

Nothing like a hot shell case down your back. Try being left handed and shooting all those right handed semi-automatics. Worst I ever had was a hot 20-06 case from a fully automatic BAR when I was 16 in the Army national Guard.

You can color anodize aluminum to about any color you can think of. Is it possible that it's aluminum with black anodized finish?

The case weight is identical to a brass case, and when I scraped the "coating" off, it was as glossy as a nickel plated case, so I don't think so.

One of the best decisions I ever made was to listen to my dad and learn to shoot right handed.

Try applying some cold blue if you want a black case. It works. Works on bullets too.

Years ago (when you are an old fart the number is never certain), at a gun show I saw boxes of new 9 MM and 40 S&W Winchester ammo in factory boxes with black brass and black bullets. I think the boxes were black with red writing -- maybe it was the new dreaded Black Talons ???

Moly coating. Flash back 15 years and the stuff was all the rage with some loaders here. My first reaction was the same as yours, but turned out 2 competitors were coating the whole loaded cartridge with moly, and normal case cleaning does not affect it. They stopped using it when they had trouble getting it out of the bore of their pistols.

I know Hornady has Police only 308 Win in "Subdued" and nickel and yellow brass, the black brass is for non-reflective tactical situations. I believe 223 and pistol ammo are available also.

Hornady used to sell the TAP line with blackened nickeled brass. I think it's just nickeled now.

I've thought about that before. Everyone is always looking for some gimmick for marketing purposes. For those that are fanatic about keeping track of their brass at the range they could easily pick theirs out. There was some 40 cal for sale recently that was pink. I think it was some govt agency (or their supplier) selling surplus thru Midway. My guess it was their way to distinguish practice ammo from duty rounds. Personally, I think it would be a good seller, probably wouldn't cost much to do it and would get some buyers attention. If you wanted to try different loads in the same caliber think about how easy it would be to know which load you are shooting.
