Bought the $6.00 Lyman manual for 380, 9mm,40 & 45 ACP.
item # 9780004 Auto Pistol.

On page 40 it list the OAL for the Speer#4006 147gr bullet at...
1.115" and the maximum load is at 6.6 grs of Blue Dot.

Speer calls for 5.8 grs of Blue Dot.

With Winchester brass, 5.8 grs of BD has the bullet sitting on top of 5.8 grs and the OAL before compression is at ...........
1.17".

I think Lymans OAL and maximum amount of powder may be off a little?

As a note, 5.1 grs of BD has the bullet sitting at around 1.13" which is Speers data for its OAL.
I will not use BD..........just getting data for the log book.

The 9mm data is a very SAFE 9mm Luger !!

The 115 and 125gr Jhp data with some powders is .8 grs below my 1970 Lyman and old Speer manuals............

but hay, it goes "Bang".

It would be a heck of a lot better if they would standardize the barrel they used. About the time I think I have found a good load I notice they used a 7.8 inch barrel and I have a 4.1". I don't think I am going to get their results. Don

This is why a chronograph is necessary. But with all things in a manual, it's all just guidelines anyway.

Ed, quick question. Do these lyman manuals have any different load data than the 49th? If so they seem cheap enough to pick one up when placing an order for something else.

I've seen these listed also, but as has been said, reviews were so-so.

I like collecting loading manuals & data but don't want to waste my money. So I'd appreciate info. on the Lyman and possibly the Load Book USA? 38 Spec., 9mm, 40 S&W, 45acp & 223/5.56

I have the old lyman 45th.........do not have the 49th.

This manual for the 125 Jhp has:
clays, titegroup, bullseye, 700x, 231, acc5, unique, p pistol, universal, n340, T blue, hs6, acc7 and B dot.
max pressures were from 29,300 to 32,400 CUP.

I just checked the Alliant reloading site.
They no longer show data for 125 gr 357 MGN bullets and Blue Dot.
They do show data for other weight bullets in 357 MGN using Blue Dot.

The powders quoted are for 125 jhp 9mm, not 357. And the are in the exact order of my 49th so at least it appears it's probably the same info.

Reloading manuals are kinda like taking a room full of lab technicians, then telling them to test/find loads for a specific caliber/round and come back with their results. They all go to their own laboratories, use their own equipment, their own lots of powder and primers and sometime use similar but different bullets. Some may use real guns, some may use universal receivers with differing barrel lengths, plus some may be new tight barrels and some may be worn out.

Do you think they will come back with identical results?

I have to ask; did the OP contact Lyman about this or just arbitrarily decide to alert the public of this "error" based on the fact that the data didn't align itself with other data he'd seen?

I remember seeing data for the 7mm Rem. Mag in an old Speer manual being declared in error due to low velocities. The fact was the data was correct for the firearm used in the testing. See also comments in post #10.

I would suggest that the OP contact Lyman concerning this and report back. Until then, the data is accurate but I would always follow handloading Rule#1-start low and work up.
