Default 223 Brass Dents

Got a new AR-15 this week. Shot it today for the first time. Rifle functions perfectly. Pretty accurate. However, when I was inspecting the spent brass, after taking it out of the tumbler, I noticed dents in the cases. All of them have nearly identical dents, in nearly the exact same location. I'm thinking maybe its the brass hitting the brass deflector. IDK. Anyway, do y'all think this brass is OK for reloading?

The brass will reload just fine.
You're right; the dents are from the deflector.
They will probably press out when you full length resize the cases.

That's a common AR thing. Reload away. Capacity will be reduced slightly, but the dents will fire form out--at least until ejection!

Put a piece of Velcro on the brass deflector. No more dents.

Yea, I thought about what I might put on there to avoid the dents. The velcro is a pretty good idea. Thanks, I'll give that a try.

My brother uses a little piece of black leather held in place with a drop of contact cement on the deflector, works well and the glue comes off with acetone when needed.

Leather! I've got some scraps laying around. Another good idea.
FWIW, I ran the cases through a full-length re-sizing die today. The dents are still there, although somewhat diminished.

I don't understand the concern about denting the empties. It shows the deflector is doing its job and doesn't affect the reloading of the brass.

All my AR's have the anodizing worn off on the back edge of the deflector. It's normal use and not abuse.

Over years I have owned 7 AR's and I did this to all of them. (Did it to my M1a's also) I removed the ejector and spring and then cut 3 sometimes 4 coils off of the spring. Shooting sitting or prone all of the ejected brass would be within easy reach and no dents in them either. I had one particular 308 Garand where I would place a 2 gal. Bucket beside the bench and all the ejected brass would fall into the bucket.

Odd. Mine does not dent the brass like that.
Resizing will not remove the dents.
