Default 9mm Plated 124gr Xtreme FP load info

I recently picked up a Beretta 92 FS 9mm and have some Xtreme 124gr FP bullets (not the heavy plated).

The only info I see for HP38 at Hodgdon is for Berry's Hollow Base plated. What effect does the hollow base have on the load data compared to the standard flat base I have?

Anyone using HP38 for 9mm?
Thanks

I ran short with my w231 and cut it off with 1/5th of a jar left.

I did try a few loads in a 3" Kahr with a Xtreme RN plated in 115 and 124gr before I put the powder away.

You will get a lot more FPS in the sweet heart of a 9mm you picked up but here is what I got out of the short barrel with w231, the cousin of your HP38..

My Max load 5.1 grs crossed the screen at 1071 fps with the 115gr.

The 124 did not like max loads for some reason but a low amount of 4.2grs of w231 shot at poa and put 5 at .89" at 12 feet on paper behind my chrony, that read out 913 fps.

A Springfield XD9 with the 124 Xtreme and 4.5grs of w231 and a OAL of 1.14" got 1097 fps.

You should get some nice target loads with that powder in your Beretta.
Sorry for the minimum amount of data.

Good luck.

A kind thanks for sharing Ed. My confusion or doubt was using the hollow base info on a non hollow base bullet. Mass is the same but not sure on how volume in the cartridge chages with hollow base bullet.
I wasn't sure I was on the right powder with HP38 for this 124gr bullet. This is my first time using HP38, it sure shot well in my 45 acp (4.8-5.0gr plated 200gr) and awesome (3.5gr 158 SWC) in my 38 spl!
However I did not do an accuracy test like you did

NEW Products

Our Hollow Base allows the bullet to be longer and provides more contact area with the barrel and rifling which will stabilize the bullet and improve accuracy. The bullet profile is longer but the weight of the bullet remains the same and you can load these bullets using any published load data for a jacketed bullet as long as it is the same weight bullet.
The Thick Plate allows these bullets to handle velocities up to 1500 feet per second and is ideal for competitive shooters who are looking for increased accuracy and higher velocities needed for 9mm Major loads and .38 Super Comp/Open guns.

So in other words you get more bearing surface and the bullet will orbitrate base expands) and seal the chamber/barrel for better accuracy (in theory)

Yes, I have used HP38 for 9mm for years but switch on and off with other powders.

I'm stating the obvious, but if a flat base bullet and hollow base are seated to the same depth in the case, the hollow base load should have lower pressure. Berry's recommends loading their 9mm hollow base rather long, as I recall (around 1.145). Regardless, I wouldn't get too hung up on the different designs of plated bullets of the same weight. Find the OAL that works best for you and work up the powder charge.

FWIW, I load Xtreme 124 over 4.3 gr of 231/HP38. These are the RN design, loaded to an OAL of 1.12. These run great in all my 9s and are reasonably accurate.

As a note on that Beretta 92.........

It is a "Tank" of a weapon that the government chose for its service men that can take a beating with NATO and+P loads.

You will have no pressure problems with your HP38 powder but...
the main problem will be finding a OAL that it likes.

A short OAL will feed better in most auto's with less problems,
however I have found that if your weapon can swallow the longest OAL close to 1.165", you may get top groups and accuracy with the 124gr plated bullets.

Winchester data for a 124gr fmj at 1.169" shows 4.5 grs of w231 powder at 32,700 psi. A +P is rated at 38,500 psi.

I sure appreciate the input and suggestions. Its helpful to hear what has been tried with good results.
It does sound like a 4.0-4.3gr of HP38 will be work out.
I'm open to more input for those that care to share, thanks so far to everyone........
