SR 4756
Recently came across 2 lbs of 4756, have ever used this powder so I'm asking opinions and advice.
I load for 9mm, .40, .45ACP, .38 and .44 spl, using other powders for Magnum loads.
What are peoples experiences and thoughts?
Thanks

I have used 4756 in the past, but I believe it has been discontinued. I liked it a lot, and I think it would be useful in all the cartridges you mention. It's a fast to medium powder, about like Unique, but a speck slower, so light to medium loads are the rule.
Speer #8 had a very hot load for .38 special, breaking 1000 fps, but it was only in the one edition, and not all of those.
Congrats on your find. BTW, the cans I have are 8 ounces, so you might want to double check those, they may not be a bargain.
Shoot me a PM if you can't find loading data.

SR4756 has been discontinued and has not been produced for about a year but if you look, you can find it on shelves. Between what I had, what I've been tipped off to and what I stumbled into, I have about 15 pounds of it stored up. It burns very clean and for me, delivers superb accuracy in all my revolver target loads from 38 Special to 44 Magnum.

I've been able to build up a supply of it since its' notice of 'being discontinued'. Burns clean and use it for medium power, high power, and 'nuclear' loads in 9mm,38sp,357M,40S&W,10mm,41M,44M.

It can be used in shotgun lead and steel loads.........
115 & 124gr bullets in the 9mm. Low fps with the 147gr bullet.
110 to 158gr XTP bullets in the 357 Magnum to Fac. Dup. with no problems. Fair with lead bullets.
It is the "Load" for the 38 +P with 4" or longer barrels but I got low fps in my J frame snub nose, but it will work if needed with lead bullets.
My best loads were with the 125 and 158 jacket in the 357 magnum, for super tight groups.
It may get a little "Wild" at the top loads so work up slowly to full loads. CCI500 worked best for me. No need for mag primers.
Good shooting.

I have shot about a thousand rounds of 45 auto using of 4756 under a .452, 230gr. LRN with good results. I have a couple of pounds of it left. Wished I had more.

Thank you all for the input.
Sounds like a pretty flexible powder if you're careful at the top end.
I've been using Bullseye but haven't seen any for awhile.

A great powder. Sad to see it discontinued; but not before I got 2 cases last year of the last batch they made.

Recipes and pet loads welcome.
I'd be using lead cast/plated bullets in the above calibers for general range shooting a club IDPA type shoots, under 1,000 fps.
Jacketed for hi vel and magnum loads.

I have a 12 ga slug load with it. It's a brutal yet accurate beast that I intend to keep in the special collection.

I got the best results for 45 auto using 4756 at one grain higher than the starting load listed for the 230 GR. LRN bullet on the Hodgdon Reloading Data website. It is my chosen load for this powder / bullet combo. Right now I am working up a load using the same bullet over 7625. I have plenty of it on hand.

I load only handload target ammo for all my handguns - for the few rounds you fire each year while hunting, I just buy factory loads. One box lasts for years.
I load SR4756 as follows:
- .38 Special - 4.0 grains with a 148-grain HBWC
- .357 Magnum - 6.0 grains with a 158-grain LSWC
- .44 Magnum - 10.0 grains with a 240-grain LSWC
I used to use it in my .38 Super and .45ACP loads but I've found AutoComp works a little better in my 1911s and obviously will be available longer.

I was using 4756 quite a bit in my Glock 35 40 S&W and Colt New Frontier .44 Special... until I tried it in my STI .38 Super. Only got 6 lbs. left and the .38 Super gets it all!
Bullet: Bullet Works 180 gr. RNFP Plated
Powder: IMR SR-4756 6.3 grs.
Primer: Winchester Small Pistol
Case: Winchester 40 S&W
LOAL: 1.135
Average Velocity: 950.91 fps
Bullet: Leadhead/RCBS 44-250K (.432)
Powder: IMR SR-4756 7.8 grs.
Primer: Federal 150
Case: Starline .44 Special
Avg. Vel.: 920.43 fps (7 1/2 inch barrel)
Uh... my loads for my Open Gun are too hot to list here!

I tried SR4756 years ago. My ancient memory only conjures up that I liked it and it burned clean. Since it's been discontinued, I may well grab a "can" if I see it. With apologies to John C. Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival: "See how good the water tastes when you can't have any (a)tall". (Lyrics to "Bootleg"). Have I dated myself yet?

Ah, yes--CCR. Stuff that nobody today would appreciate.
Thanks for the memory jolt, Shil.

Saw that you load for .44 Special. I had a Colt SAA in .44 Spcl (gave it to my son for college graduation) that loved 8.1 gr. of 4756 with a Keith SWC cast bullet. A powerful and accurate load in that gun.
