Default Bayou Coated 150 grain SWC .356"

Just placed an order for these slugs.

I need a little help seeing holes at 25 yds on a B27 target, should I need to make any corrections.

I shot a match yesterday (saturday) and I was clean out to the 15 yard line. I checked my target to prepare for the last stage which is 18 rounds, 90 seconds, 25 yard line (all free standing, no barricade, point shoulder)

While I felt a few get away (meaning I moved right before the shot broke), I was angry with myself as I felt I could have done better. I was not able to see the flyers at 25 yds. That why I purchase SWC slugs.

OK, any suggestions for a good target load 900-1000 fps.

I have the following powders:
AA2
B/E
N310
N320
N330
WSL
WSF
WST
231/HP38

below target was shot with 4.3 gr WSF pushing a 125 RN .357 hard cast slug set at 1.080" out of a Nowlin barrel 1911 5".

my records show 4.0 gr of WSF pushing a 147 lead slug set at 1.15" and got decent groups at 50 yds. That information was obtained online.

my 9mm load book shows a window of 3.7 to 4.1 using WSF and a 147 lead slug. I will just need to find an optimal OAL.

if anyone has working knowledge with 150 SWC (bayou), please chime in. My match is Oct 31.

here is my sat target

My 9mm likes the large 147gr RN at 1.165" OAL.
It has to drop down to 1.14" in a 3" Kahr to feed and fit the mag.

I would try the slow WS powder, .2 over the starting load at the longest OAL that will work in your weapon.
My 9's did not like fast powders with the real heavy bullets for some reason.
With the long bullets, I never went shorter than 1.13" oal.

Good shooting.

Back many years ago when I shot PPC, we loaded a 121 gr (9mm bullet but left unsized and came out .356-.357. Loaded 3.3 gr 231 for a real powder-puff load that was very accurate in 6" 686, or 6" 19-3. From your selection of powders am familiar with N310 which is in a similar burning range as 231 or Bullseye. Somewhere around 3.0 gr. should get you a very mild and accurate load. I only load WST in .45 acp, and it does best on the warm side, (above 5.0 gr).

Default Follow Up

I ordered the .356" 150 gr SWC from Bayou Bullets on Sunday and they arrived yesterday. WOW!

I set up my 550 and was shooting for 1.15" but landed on 1.148" and will settle on that for OAL. No primer….dud round.

Slugs measured just a tad over .356" (got to be the coating for the little extra)

Slight taper crimp to close the opening and dropped in my 9mm gauge and Nowlin barrel. All good.

I cleaned my 1911, oiled and put the dud round in the mag and gave it several slide stop closures. Did not loose any length.

I have chosen to start at 3.9 WSF using a CCI primer.

Hope to test this weekend.

Starting in the basement is always a good idea..............
"Going up" !!

I like the looks of that Gold bullet.
You should be able to work to maximum OAL if needed with that ogive.
No way should it hit the rifling, just depends on your magazine and how it will feed.

Hope it feeds well in your pistol and tight groups are ahead.
Stay safe.

thanks for the info NE!

I will record that info in my reloading bible for future reference.

I believe my mag will hold a "much" longer round (Factory Springer Mags with the feed ramp…I think MeGar make them)

at first I did a couple of slide control "feeds" while I watched the round go into the chamber. Very smooth and then I went to some slide slams.

and this is funny, I am using mixed brass that I am trying to get rid of. I recall picking up this brass from a training event in the 90s where it rained on us the entire weekend. When I pulled this brass out over a year ago to separate…..it was heavily stained/tarnished and wondered if it would work in my match chambered 1911s. It has worked and I still have well over (guess) 500 in my tub.

I have a lot of once fired 9mil brass and just wanted to cull this tarnished brass out of my inventory (HA!)

I loaded 50 test rounds and shot my match (practice), timed using the honor system. No sandbag or barricade, all free hand to not only test the rounds but practice for the last match of the season.

Load
150 grain coated .356" SWC Bayou Bullets
3.9 WSF
CCI Primer
rough tarnished range pick up brass (mixed commercial)
OAL 1.155" (random-plunk and gauge tested)

Recoil was snappy for 3.9 but examined a few spent casing and no signs of any issues. Recoil also seemed to alter my follow through as the shots favor right a tad. I found myself aiming on the left side of the bullet hole.

5 yd line was 8 shots in 2 shot intervals at 3 seconds.
7 yd line was 12 shots in 25 seconds.
15 yd line was 12 shots in 35 seconds.
25 yd line was 18 shots in 90 seconds. I hit my last round at 89 seconds.

overall pleased with the performance and I am thinking about 2 clicks left. I plan to load another 50 and test/practice again next weekend.

5 and 7 yds (20 shots total)

5, 7 and 15 yds (32 shots total)

my second shot, when the hammer fell, I moved and my sights went high. It still manage to touch the 10 ring. I also felt the other two flyers, I was low when the shot broke and right on the other.

Overall, I wish that had been my match day. Practice…….

5, 7, 15 and 25 yds (50 shots total)

"KaZaam"............

Now that's what I am talking about !!

Sorry they did so poor on their first outing.........

Don't think you will have to mess around too much with that combo, if you want to fine tune it.

I definatly think you are on to something.

Good luck at the next match.
