Default Tite Group Powder Qestion

I bought a 1# container of Tite Group for pistols, but after reading other forums I have a little concern. Using lead cast bullets for 380,38 special & 9mm other places say Tite Group burns to hot & will melt the bullet. I will be loading on the low side of the Hodgdon recommendations to start & never over the Max recommendations. Is this something I should be concerned with?

Thanks Mike

I used Tite Group for years in 38/357 with no issues. Care due to high density/low powder amount to make potential overload is well advised.

I'd continue using it but haven't seen any locally for long enough I've run out of it.

I generally used mid-range to near max published charges, never had a problem. Good luck.

Fears of TiteGroup melting your bullets are unfounded in my experience using it. All my handloading for handgun rounds is for cast bullet target loads in five calibers and while TiteGroup is not my first choice for a powder, it is a good one.

TiteGroup also is a popular shotgun powder and is used in Remington Nitro 27 handicap trap factory loads. If it doesn't melt the plastic wads against which it burns and exerts its pressure, it sure isn't going to melt lead bullets.

The "melting your bullets" story has been around for years....and it is nonsense. In the first place, with the density of lead alloys.....and the really short time to which a cast bullet is exposed to high temperatures before it leaves the barrel....such a phenomenon is ridiculous. So, just from a purely scientific point of view, there are no worries about Titegroup of this nature.

As anecdotal evidence, I have used pound and pounds of Titegroup in 38 special loads and some in 9mm (though not as much).....and have never had a negative issue of any kind. I use Titegroup more or less interchangeably with Bullseye (though not always the same charge wt. - as they are two different powders) with great results.

Light target loads, heavier SD loads.....Titegroup will work just fine.

I buy Titegroup in 8lb when I can. Like above never an issue. I even worked up a load for .38 S&W with no problem.

I've used it with good results, not my go to powder but it gets the job done.

TG has and can pitch fits with lead.
However, all these issues are eliminated with coated cast.
That said, TG is not my first choice of powder, nor is it my second or third .... around 7th or 8th it might begin to enter consideration.
You might want to take CFE pistol for a test drive here.

I shoot thousands of cast bullets per year never a problem and my groups are small. When I couldn't find 2400 H110 in my area I used Titegroup with cast bullets in my .44mag. At near or max loads I now use Titegroup in my .38, .45acp, and .45colt loads all the time.

I use TiteGroup in five different calibers, all cast bullet target loads and have no problem with leading and get good accuracy. And don't believe you have to use coated bullets, you do not. I am using Lee liquid Alox tumble lube.

Did you leave it in the funnel for a few days? Or did that etch in a matter of jours?

A lot - maybe most - powders will do that if left in the reservoir long enough. But I do have to say that while I drain my powder measures as soon as I am finished loading, I have left (unintentionally) powder in one of my Dillon powder measures for a week or more on one occasion and there was no etching. I planned to finish my loading the next evening but got waylaid somehow.

Replacing that RCBS reservoir is not fun. You pretty much have to break the old reservoir to remove it and the new one will fit so tightly you probably won't be able to get it in the housing. I damaged one of my RCBS reservoirs a few years back and while they sent me a new one at no charge, I wound up sending the whole measure to them for a no-charge repair. A new Competition measure I bought before I invested in the Dillon 650 had a greasy substance inside it that I could not get completely out so I gave aerosol automotive brake parts cleaner a try and while it did remove the greasy stuff, it attacked the plastic, giving it a frosted look.

Maybe that's what is inside yours?

Ed

When you puta new plastic tube on...boil it standing up in a pot of water...about 2 mins. It will slip right on and then will shrink right down tight

That makes sense. I wonder why RCBS didn't suggest that to me.

Well I learned it waaayyy back yonder when I was a distributor for P-W shotshell loaders. Plastic shot and powder tubes were too small when ya got 'em...just like the RCBS powder tube. Somebody told me you can microwave 'em too. Boiling water works just fine. Oh and just like case mouths..chamfer the tube just slightly.. Figgered that one out too.

The issue of titegroup melting bullets isn't really an issue that will cause problems, in the sense of creating a dangerous situation. I used it with soft swaged lead bullets, and yes, it did melt the bullets and I did get worse leading than I did with Bullseye. Nothing dangerous, it just took longer to clean up afterwards. The gun was very obviously warmer too.

I was not overwhelmed with its accuracy, it was not appreciably cleaner than Bullseye, and probably smoked more. It fills the case less than Bullseye. Given all that, while it works ok, I decided for my purposes there were better choices.

Since you have it, go ahead and use it, you may like it.

I have used TG for years with no problems. I also use 231 and both are fast powders and do not take much powder. I dont find 3.2 grains of TG in my 38 loads melting bullets but it does heat up your lube and that is what most people think is melting, not the bullet. There are multiple warnings about double charging TG and while true it is also true for many powders, not just TG. I find TG to be very accurate in my 38's and 9's. I just picked up a model 10 and took it to the range and had 158 grain SWC bullets I poured with some 231 and TG in others. The TG loads were amazingly accurate while the 231 loads were very good. Dont be afraid of Titegroup, it is a good powder.

Titegroup is near the same league as 'Bullseye', a little goes a long way.

Just use it for the correct application, often lighter target loads, and measure carefully. One should be measuring carefully with any powder.

I've never had a problem with Titegroup.

As Husky notes, the lube burning off from the high burn temp of TG is what causes the leading in most guns. That, the small volume per wt, I have no use for TG in anything, jmo.
