AutoComp verse 231 powder?
Anyone see a difference in these two powders? I've never shot AutoComp and would like to know how it compares to Winchester 231.

Autocomp is a slower burning powder. I find that with lighter loads it leaves more residue than 231.

In response to a reader complaining about the shortage of W231 to
Handloader author Brian Pearce, Pearce said that Autocomp was
superior to 231 in every way but did require slightly higher charge
weights to achieve the same velocities as 231. Load data for Autocomp
and CFE pistol are basically interchangeable but they are different
powders.

Thanks all! I shoot pretty light loads so I'll wait a few more years until 231 becomes available again.

Auto comp is a good powder, as mentioned you use a little bit more. I bought some a long time ago when I could not find HP 38
HP 38 has been around, just bought 8 lbs of it.

I love Auto comp. My favorite 9mm powder is Accurate #5 but that has just recently started showing up again so I tried out Auto comp, suggest you do too. The recoil seems very crisp without feeling stronger. I'm just going to use 231 in revolvers from now on.

I should have added I just picked up 8# Win 231 so things are loosening up. Good Luck.

Auto-Comp is a good clean burning powder, it's all I use for target handgun loads.

I just ordered 16 pounds of Accurate #5 from Brownell's, that should keep me busy for a while.
Thanks to all!

I agree with those who have recommended AutoComp for target loads. That's the only kind of handgun ammo I handload and I use AutoComp in all my .38 Super and .45ACP 1911s. It will burn completely and cleanly at near-minimum charge weights and is very accurate for me. I use it with 125-grain cast semi-wadcutters in the Super and 185-grain cast semi-wadcutters in the .45s.

Perhaps the best part - it's readily available!
