Default 629 Cylinder length

My SIL owns a S&W model 629 and lives 100 miles from me. Can someone tell me either the cylinder length or it's ability to accept a COL of 1.710"?

I have some handloads utilizing the RCBS 245 gr. SWC which has a loaded length of 1.710", which is .100" longer than SAAMI specs for .44 magnum.

Thanks in advance!

I load 1.71 for a 629-4 Classic. There is a bit more room to increase COAL but have never measured the cylinder itself.

My 629-2 MR measures 1.702.
A friend has my 6" 629-1 so no data for that one for now.
The old countersunk cylinders are going to be longer but that doesn't necessarily mean they have any more room for COAL.
Seems as if there is some variation between various vintages of 29 and 629 models.
Don't forget the rim thickness. 44 rims are typically around .06".
Subtract that from your COAL to compare to the cylinder length if not a countersunk cylinder.
This means my cylinder above SHOULD take a cartridge 1.762" long.
Your 1.71" should be fine.
Only way to really tell is to load one in the cylinder and see if it sticks out the end.

The rcbs swc and the lyman 429421 both have the same oal.
1.710"
Just measured a 429421 reload it measures 1.710".
It fits in my 629-3, the 629-3 cylinder measures 1.705".
The rim on the 44mag cases measures .055".

1.710 - .055 ='s 1.655"

I have plenty of room in my 629-3 with that bullet/case combo. I've shot several 1000 of them in that 629 over the years.

Hope this helps.
