I'm getting 1150 or a bit more using 2400 and a 158 XTP in a 2 1/2" M66. Charge is a grain under max, but I get real good accuracy out of that load in a couple different guns.

JHP or JSP, 1150fps is about all you can expect from your 2 1/2" M686. About what I get in my M66.

3" ported 586, 158 grain Nosler JHP, 11.2 grains 3N38, WSPM, 1.592" OAL ... I haven't clocked 'em yet, but I love 'em nonetheless.

I've never got to hung up on velocity. More concerned with accuracy. Todays bullets are working better than bullets of the past. A 158gr HP @ 1100 fps is big medicine for curing a bad guy. Just make sure they hit were your gun is aiming; consistently.

With just 1100fps that bullet has 424 ft/lbs of energy........

the Old good FBI 38 special +P load at 850fps only had 250 ME.

Looking good.

Text book says 1350 fps in a 6", but I don't have a way to check velocity on a 2.5 barrel.
