Where's the Alliant _________ powder?
Since I and many of you have not been able to find Alliant powders for quite some time, and many web-experts have offered a variety of reasons....
I went to the experts and asked. Here's the reply.
Quote:
Frank,
We are making, packing and shipping all of our propellants on regular schedule. This includes the Sport Pistol you are seeking.
Alliant does not ship any of our propellants direct to the consumer.
I am unable to tell you directly where any of the propellant are going though. We only ship and sell to our distributors. We have 30 of these we sell to. The distributors then only deal with and sell to their dealers/retailers and wholesalers. They only deal with these folks no one else.
We work off from a backorder system where whoever is at the top of the list, there the longest, will get product first. We are told that the distributors also work off from the same system.
Distributors are not limited to a zone. In other words, they can sell and ship to anyone anywhere in the country.
Once we ship the distributor, we have no clue as to whom the next recipient of that propellant.
All we can tell you is keep diligent in your search for our propellants.

Theory
I think this is a case of “The Squeaky Wheel gets it”.
I’m just wondering if Retailers are not aggressive
in ordering or maybe delivery is very costly.
Maybe Retailers have the Powder but can sell
it another way and make a profit?
Something’s not right!

None of my LGS have had any Alliant powder in recent memory. All say they simply can't get it.
Where it may be going is a mystery...?

Saw Bullseye and Power Pistol at LGS snout 2 weeks ago. $45.00/ pound. Hadn’t seen any in about 2 years. It’s starting to come back but the supply isn’t consistent yet.

There is no mystery. Check out a few popular auction sites under reloading supplies. Powder, primers, bullets. It's all available. It just costs 10 times more than what we've paid for it for years. People buy all that's available, and re-sell it. It will stop when we all stop buying the stuff. Supply will catch up with demand at some point.

Yeah, and thats the dortiest bunch of BS Ive seen in a long time. I hassel and belittle them whenever I can, not that they care one bit with all the dollar signs in their eyes.
Ive been looking for several Alliant powders for pistols for quite a while and havent seen nary a one, anywhere. I see folks on here and other forums talking about finding some but dont think Ive gotten an answer yet. I havent really seen any of their rifle powders either. I dont need any of those necessarily, I mean sure it would be nice to have more than I have but I have what I need of those to last me a while but have only one pound of an Alliant pistol powder, and I jist lucked into that at a gunsmiths shop, he said he picked it up at an estate sale. IMR is ALMOST as bad but Alliant is jist ridiculous

Accurate powders are available off and on. Early on in this latest episode, I gathered everything I need to make black powder in case it comes to that. I'm not going to be dependent on manufacturers or politicians.

Since I ran out of Sport Pistol I moved to Win231. Next up will be CFE Pistol.
Running low on H335 so I'll move on to something else...if I can find something else.
I suppose the Alliant shortage has made many fans move on to whatever they can get their hands on. Some may go back, some may not.

I saw this with Fedarm. I bought some primed 22LR cases early on for about $40/2000. Then they had none in stock but gunbroker had them for over a hundred bucks per 2000, shipping from the same place under a different name. I'd bet that quite widespread.

I remember the last Alliant shortage. Once it passed and it became available again at reasonable prices-I stocked up. I also searched for 2 years, but bought what I could find that I could use at the time. TiteGroup, Red Dot, 700X, w231/HP38; I bought what I could find. I no longer need to look for powder, I have a lifetime supply. Buy it cheap, stack it deep!

Was at the local reloading shop on Friday. Asked about powders and they responded they are just starting to see some powders they ordered in early 2020.

Hercules/Alliant powders have always been rare for me to find locally.
I have seen some in the last 6 months or so, but not at a price I'm willing to pay. Too many other usable powders to get me to pay outrageous amounts for any one brand or type.
A while back I stumbled upon a 4lb container of Winchester 572 @ $64. Never considered it, but after a quick look at the burn rate chart it came home with me. It's an excellent propellant for my applications. I look at it as a time to expand my horizon.

These times call for versatility and the ability to expand one's horizon as far a powders go.
I have always been a three powder guy, Bullseye, Unique and 2400. But - time have changed.
Found some HP-38 (W231) to use in target loads that had previously used Bullseye. Found 296 to replace 2400 in m .22 hornet (actually shoots much tighter with 296) and .221 and .30 carbine.
Found BE86 works as almost a 1:1 replacement for Unique and started using RL-16 in the .270 (got higher velocity with no pressure signs)
Had always heard one should have more than one "pet" load, time now bares that out.
