Default 38 Spl +P with Power Pistol

Chrono'd 5.6 grs PP and 158 gr cast SWC from 6 in S&W Mod 10 and five shot averaged 978 fps.

I was very impressed. Duplicates the velocity of Remington's 158 gr LHP 38 Spl +P load from 6 in. Good practice load for the Rem round.

Anyone else have PP data for 38 Spl +P?

Sounds like a good replica load. I make mine with HS-6.

Alliant says you can use up to 6.0gr under 158gr swc.

I haven't used Power Pistol in anything in several years, but I found it to be one of those powders, like HS-6, that's great for velocity (particularly in the .38 Special), but accuracy seemed to require more work than with older and faster standby powders like Bullseye and 231. Nevertheless, experiment enough and accuracy will surface.

As an important note, that statement is based solely on cast bullet work.

Eric,

Just shot some .38-44 tests Monday. RCBS .38-158 GC over 6.7/Power Pistol Fed 100 SP, gave me 1139 FPS from My Outdoorsman. Also shot 5.1/Power Pistol behind Lyman 358477 150 LSWC. Standard pressure per the books but gave me 956 FPS from my 4" 12-2, and felt like it too! Gave about the lowest ES & SD I have seen from any load, 22/7.

As I have mentioned before, the Outdoorsman is slow, giving about the same velocities as a 4-5" barrel. Conversely the 12-2 4" is particularly fast, giving velocities usually seen from many 6" barrelled guns.

Thank you Alk8944, great info as well.

PP is going to be my new go to powder for 38 Spl +P. I've also loaded twenty 357 Mag cases with 7.2 grs PP behind same 158 gr cast SWC. Soon to test these also in my S&W Mod 28.

Default I'm using PP....

.... in a .38 j frame snub with 135 grain Gold Dots. Unfortunately the sky wasn't good for the chrono to work but I can say that they are whipper snappers.

Yeah, I need to try the .38-44 load in my 6 1/2" ".357 Magnum" and see how it compares to the Outdoorsman.

A gentleman from Virginia posted on here about the virtues of Winchester Super Field . I decided to try it and have stuck with it ever since for 38spl thru all the magnums and up to and including 45 LC . I always started with unique load data and went up slowly from there . I use the Lee TL 358-158 round nose in 6 cavity for my 38spl loads .
If I want a little more power , I either use HS-6 or Alliant 2400 , but not the current load data for either . I will not post those loads here .
