Default 4227--2400 powder

I ran across a modified 19-3 from a gun show a while back and started playing with it at 25 yards. The range was clear yesterday so I moved out to 50 yards. The first target at 25 was 2400 with a 200 grain lead bullet. The second target I loaded 6 rounds with IMR 4227 and a 200 grain lead bullet at 50 yards and pulled one high. The third target was 4227 with a 125 grain JHP. All were shot with CCI magnum primers All were shot from a sand bag. All were in the middle range of magnum loads. I am going to try 100 yards next. The gun seems to like most loads. 4227 leaves a little powder in the barrel and cylinder but a few swipes with a nylon brush it is gone. The 19-3 shoots 38 specials just as good.

I have used 4227 for years . I have read that what we think is unburnt powder is actually just filler . I found it to be very accurate . It delivers about a 100fps less velocity than H110 , but as I said before it is very accurate . I have been a winchester primer person for years except ---- when loading 4227 , then I always use a full magnum primer - cci , federal etc . It always seems to give better ignition and I felt the groups tightened up a bit . It does well with my cast bullet loads using 225gr to 260 gr . My 225 gr load is the old " New Mexico " load of 24gr with my 225 gr gas checked cast bullet on top . In New Mexico there are a lot of open ranges so longer shots are pretty common , when hunting .
For 245-260 gr cast bullets I use 23 grs of IMR 4227 , full magnum primer . Good Luck
