The J in FMJ implies jacketed bullets, but for really cheap bullets you need to look for cast or plated bullets. You would need to use less than full throttle powder charges to avoid leading.

Jacketed bullets have become so expensive, it's cheaper to just buy loaded ammunition.

As cowart says, you have to go lead if you want to save money.

Powder coated cast bullets have a lot of the qualities of jacketed at cast prices. They can be pushed to jacketed velocity without leading. Check Missouri Bullet Company, Bayou Bullets, and there are others.

With larger quantities (2000 - 3000) in an order and flat rate shipping you can still load jacketed at a decent cost.

Sir,

I load jacketed bullets and still save a LARGE amount of money -and so can anyone else. I buy .357s from Zero for around half the price of the bullets made by Hornady, Sierra, etc. and they are just a few dollars a thousand more than Berry's plated bullets. And there are a couple other manufacturers who offer jacketed for comparable prices. Of course cast are the least expensive, but it's not true that one must buy cast to save money.

Let me know if I can help you any further.

Regards,
Andy

I bought from Precision Delta when I used jacketed. Now I use Hi-Tek coated from Missouri Bullet Company.

I use Rainier Plated, I have had good luck with them, you can get them in 500 or 1000 units. I wish I could buy them direct. Research is your friend.

Powder Valley:
Zero .357" 158gn JHP: $192.50/2000 (9.6 cents)
Zero .430" 240gn JHP: $72/500 (14.4 cents)

X-treme:
158gn P-HP: $55.17/500 (11 cents)
240gn P-RNFP (no HP offered): $63.60/500 (12.7 cents)

So, just a quick check of two sources shows that "plated is cheaper" is NOT always true--and you can't get much better than Zero bullets for accuracy and consistency.
Although, I have to agree, std. cast and coated cast are the way to go in almost all cases.

By shopping carefully I am still able to get jacketed bullets for less than coated. Until they really get the coated bullet price down comparable to regular cast I am passing on them. Also I have recently came into a lot of wheelweight metal from and estate at no cost so this winter I will be making lots of my own.

A little google work of what I shoot the most.

9mm 124gr. RN 500 each
Zero bullet FMJ - $57.00
Xtreme plated - $41.10
MBC coated - $35.00

45acp 230gr. RN 500 each
Zero bullet FMJ - $66.00
Xterme plated - $61.32
MBC coated - $53.50

This is regular pricing, no shipping. I get a further 5% club discount from MBC. Catch one of Xtreme's free shipping sales with 10% off and your in bullet nirvana.

Well not totally true, depending on the bullet. If the opjust wants a non expanding bullet, then plated or coated lead will be cheaper.

As i said, depends.
147gr RN RMR 9c
Win sp. 3c
3.6gr WST. 1c
Total cost with scrounged brass = 13c each, pretty close to 50% savings???
If you want to quibble over plated vs jacketed, then PD 147gr add 1c more for 14c each, still quit a bit cheaper. Again, if time is the issue, buy better gear.
At 10c per rd savings, 700rds an hour on a 650, that is a $70/hr NET savings. I dont make $120/hr gross, so even reloading 9mm, i am saving quite a bit over working to make the $$ to buy any factory ammo.

Montana Gold FMJ 115g and 124g under .10 each. 147g for .12.

When bought by the case. 9mm for $7.50 a box and 9's are where you save the least money loading.

Unless you are buying steel cased poop, you aren't buying 9mm factory for much less than $10/50 at today prices. Montana Gold makes a nice bullet but by far not the cheapest. YOu are saving the least $$$ amount reloading 9mm, but 50% is 50%.

For lead bullets I just bought 500 45acp's from Summers Enterprises, his prices are the best I have found. I got the 233gr round nose 45acp for 33.00 plus shipping. I was a little concerned about the extra 3 gr but I loaded 100 and shot them today at the range, not one problem. I think lead bullets is all he makes for now though. He is located in Mississippi. I was shooting an S&W 1911 and a 4566TSW. Fast shipping too.

But you gotta buy 3,000 bullets to get those prices.

Legally, you need a lic to sell bullets you make. Though some people trade lead for bullets. Not sure about that grey area.
