There are lot's of previous posts about various chrono's. The search function would be my suggestion.

FWIW I use a Shooting Chrony. Lot's of people poo-poo them, but maybe I was lucky and got a good one. Works for me and was reasonably priced.

There are at least 3 different types and various price points from $80 to $600. Each has its pros and cons. As 824tsv said, try searching here - we are getting weary of the long posts necessary to explain such a broad topic without biasing you, especially without more knowledge of what you expect and budget.

In addition to searching chronograph and chrono, try Labradar. That's the newest, mpost expensive, but those threads often compare/contrast the other types pretty well.

ETA: Once you have that background, don't hesitate to come back and narrow your question. I'm sure the folks here will respond with specific help.

Been through several chronos and my favorite thus far is the Caldwell Ballistic Precision.
Battenfield is a S&W subsidiary, so it's even in "the family" so to speak.
What I really like is that it uses a smartphone APP for calculations and data storage. No more writing stuff down.
And, their support is first-rate. I got stupid and lost the cable. The company FEDEXed me a replacement at no cost.

How much do you want to spend?

Do you want to chrono pistol ammo, rifle ammo, or both?

Are you fine with using a pen and paper, or do you need data exporting, storage, or printing? Do you plan on spreadsheeting your data (answer: you probably will, if you like numbers), or do you need your chrono to calculate average, SD, and ES?

Do you plan to use it indoors or outdoors?

Do you frequently shoot at dusk or first light, or in the shade?

ProChronos are a great unit for a very attractive price - usually right at $100 at online sources like MidwayUSA - and they offer their Digital Link which connects the chronograph right to your smart phone via Bluetooth. Go to their website and read about their products - ProChrono Digital - Competition Electronics

Much depends on what you want to do with it. For checking reloads and for simple load development, the lowest-priced basic Chrony will be fine. If you want to do ballistic research, then you will probably want features the basic Chrony does not have. And those will cost you a lot more.

I have used a basic Chrony since about 2002, still works, still does everything I need done. If I managed to put a bullet through it, I'd replace it with the exact same thing. I feel those who badmouth the Chrony have never used one.

Default Agree with Dwalt

I have the basic Chrony and I'm very happy with it. I just need to know the velocity of my handholds so that I may compare my results with the posted velocity per given load in commercial reloading tables. I was especially pleased with a .35 Remington factory load whose published muzzle velocity was 2150 FPS and that's exactly what I got across the Chrony.

Indeed, I'm quite pleased with my Shooting Chrony. I have the remote unit, and about the only complaint I have is that the cord it comes with is just barely long enough.

Used to be the Oehler was the gold standard. I'm sure technology has since leveled the playing field.

Still the gold standard.......with their 35P and others.......Most people just getting in won't want to pay the price.....Saying that mine is over 20 years old and still going strong......An no you can't get it for $100.00......

Some folks like their Chronys but after two junk ones my advise is to
buy any other brand within your price range.

ProChrono. Read many good reports on this unit before I picked up one. Very satisfied with this product.

Several years ago, I thought that as an outdoor writer, I ought to have a "better" chronograph than my old analog ProChrono so I bought a Pact. It wouldn't work at all and a call to them as encouraged in the instructions was a waste of time so back it went.

I then bought a CED M2. It worked when it wanted to depending upon the lighting and even after their engineer replaced every part of it one at a time over a few months, it went back too. In fairness to both of those units, my club's rifle ranges face west and mornings are the most popular time to shoot so the sun is usually behind the shooters.

So I bought a new ProChrono digital and like the old one, it works every time without regard to lighting. A friend has an Oehler P35; we lined them up one behind the other one day and their readings were within a few FPS of each other so for most of us, a $100 ProChrono is all we need.
