Default MBC, 180 grain hi-Tek coated lead

Hodgdon reloading data does not help much for this bullet in my 357 mag 20" Henry Big Boy. They only show the 180 NOS PART bullet with a starting load of 13 grains of H110 for 1324 fps. Do you think that would be a safe load for the above MBC bullet? (BH=18). I would be happy with 1300 fps, if safe.

Am I correct in thinking that the peak pressure would probably be less for the coated bullet than for the NOS PART bullet? Having less friction it should start moving quicker. BH=18 should limit bullet compression at 1300 fps.

Mike

Did you buy the coated or uncoated projectile?

Your title says coated bout your text says BH=18

I just got a box of the 180 grain STRIKERs from MBC last week, but I bought the coated ones.

I won't be using H110 since I want these to be sub sonic for use in my suppressed lever gun.

For the faster loads, I use the Remington 180 grain SJHPs and a healthy charge of H110

13 grains of H110 is a sound starting point for either the lead or the coated projectiles. However H110 is a bad powder for plain based lead bullets. I would use a different powder of you did not buy the coated STRIKERs

When I started loading Hy-Tek coated bullets and PCing my own I used lead bullet data. No problems and they all shot pretty good (1200 in my 45 ACP and a couple hundred in my 9mms.). If I think I need more velocity than this or for hunting, I'll go with jacketed, and normal paper shooting I'll just go with nekkid lead, or PC...

I bought the coated Strikers. I have 200 of 158 grain JHP HDY XTP loaded up using 16 grains of H110. The data book said a little less than 1700 fps. I hope to get the 180's in before Tuesday when I plan to go to the range.

Mike, if you remember back in your thread about "FT-bls of energy" in post #26, you can see my answer to that very loadout in my Rossi and my pistols, I didn't see any pressure signs whatsoever with using the MBC 180 grain coated Striker bullets. If you are using the other 180 grain bullet that MBC sells, then I can't help you though but I think it would be safe since that's a starting load of H110.

Of course, go with what you want but I have tried this combo and have chrono results posted in that thread also.

I load my Winchester 158 JHPs with just a bit more H110 than that and I clear 1700 FPS from the 16" Rossi Carbine. I never ran it through the longer Rossi rifle. So I am certain that you will hit your goal in that 20" Big Boy

Thanks Muddocktor, I had not seen that reply.

I shot the MBC 180 grain coated bullet (hi Tek Striker) today with my 357 mag Henry Big Boy. Used 13.5 grains of H110 and CCI 500 primers (could not find mag primers). I got about a 3" group at 100 yards. No signs of over pressure and I could not see any lead in the barrel. I shot 10 rounds at each of 2 targets for a total of 20 rounds. Both groups were about the same. The velocity as per Hodgdon was 1381 fps from a 18.5" barrel.

I also shot 158 gr. JHP HDY XTP with 16.7 grains of H110. Stated velocity was 1757 fps. Those groups were a little smaller at 100 yards.

The recoil with the 180 grain bullets was not near as severe as my 30-06. I took a heavy pair of wool socks for shoulder padding (old army trick).

I figure I'll use both rounds for hogs. I purchased the 100 round sample pack of the 180's. The scope was a cheap BSA. Gotta get a better one.

I have shot 180 gr cast bullets plain base (cast myself ) for years on top of W296 with no problems of leading using magnum primers . My load is more than current manuals so I won't publish it . I have shot them out of a model 28 HP . The 28 has a 6" barrel . The performance was impressive .
