Default Berrys 45ACP 185gr HBRN Taper Crimp?

I have been taper crimping 45 cast bullets to what I thought was .468 and it was working well. Now I'm making a dummy round for the Berrys bullet and my taper crimp is not holding the bullet tight enough. After crimping, I can push the bullet into the case with moderate thumb pressure. Is this normal? How much taper crimp is required for this bullet? Thanks in advance.

The bullet should measure .452 and you should not be able to push it even without crimping. The case is not sized correctly.

This bullet is sized .451, is that normal for a plated bullet?

I agree, the bullet should not move even without a crimp. The crimp does not increase the neck tension and crimp does not hold the bullet. The crimp is only to iron out the bell you put on the mouth of the case to help start the bullet.

If the bullet is not tight there is something wrong with the sizing the case.

Belling out the case to much. You only want to bell just enough to allow the bullet to sit straight up on the end in a stable manner and not be able to push it into the case. Excessive belling will wear out the brass sooner. The bell adjustment needs to be checked for every different bullet you choose to use.

Does it do this with every round or just intermittent?

Are you perchance using Remington brass?

.468 is pretty tight. Possibly overcrimping & bulging the case? Not sure that can actually happen with a taper crimp...

IMO, that is too much crimp, you are deforming the bullet at that point with most brass. Check the actual dia of the bullet. I prefer 0.452" plated, loads just like lead. All cases are not the same either. For me RP brass is too thin for 0.451" bullets, so it gets saved for 0.452" bullets.

Depending on the die, yes it can cause spring back, loss of case neck tension.

Or the brass. As noted, RP is thin, won't hold a 0.451" bullet tight, regardless of sizing die.

I used the Berry 185 HBRN a few years ago in two gun league I was shooting. This is what worked for me: 4 grains WST, 0.472 crimp and 1.25 OAL. I use a Lee 4 die set. No setback issues and functioning was great, accuracy is my problem.

I've found too much crimp produces rounds that tumble/keyhole. It doesn't take much to over do it either. What I do now is to use a kinetic bullet puller on the first test round or two. If I see a distinctive crimp ring in the pulled bullet, I back off the die till I don't.

I do have lots of R-P brass as well as W-W and Federal. I can't swear that it was R-P, but most likely was. I will proceed to try the Federals this weekend. Thanks for all the help!

I finally found time to measure some more brass. I just went out to the shop & resized a hand full of Winchester and RP brass. They both measure .467 od and .446 id. CCI measured the same. All weigh 83--91 grains without the primer. I use Dillon <rest in peace Mike> dies. Take the flare out when you crimp and then turn in 1/4 turn and you should be in business. 45 acp is the easiest --simplest caliber to hand load for and the brass lasts the longest.

I run the same bullet with 6.0 grains of Unique with great accuracy and zero issues. Don't know what kind of dies you are using but try a Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die. I use them for all my final crimps and it is just excellent...
