I have always cleaned my brass in two separate steps: 1) clean first with old media, and 2) polish in a separate step with clean corn cobs and Nufinish or Flitz added.

I've just thrown out all my old, disgusting step 1 media and bought new ground walnut hulls from the pet store. Do any of you have a suggestion for an additive to the walnut?

I use a mix of 75% Zilla Ground English Walnut Shells purchased on Amazon and 25% Lyman Tufnut also from Amazon.

If the cases are badly tarnished I may add in a bit of Brasso

I treat crushed walnut shells with Iosso Brass Case Polish Liquid available from Midway. I get the crushed walnut shells from Harbor Freight. Harbor Freight with a 20% off coupon is cheaper than the pet shop.

After cleaning 500-800 cases I re-treat the walnut shells with a dash of mineral spirits.

I use the crushed walnut coarse size, & add a capful or 2 every now & then. After manyMany rounds I toss it out in the driveway potholes.

25# box I got nearly 20 years ago finally grew exhausted. I found RCBS had some kind of special brass cleaner with a bit of powdered ceramic in it.

Mostly my usual run of turbo clean is 15-30 minutes.

Over the years I abandoned a wide range of experimental stuff.
Never did care for the corn cob route. Didn't like a number of other suggestions either.

Anything with jewelers rouge caused problems I didn't like.

I use a capful of nu-finish car polish in my lizard litter.Works great and the small bits don't clog the flash holes.

Problems? can you expand on that statement.

Flitz now makes a Tumbler Media Additive just for treating both new media and rejuvenating existing . Had a good review in Handloader Magazine. I've used both IOSSO Case Polish and Rooster Labs Cartridge Polish in walnut shell media with excellent results.
All three of these products are made for nut media and brass cartridge case polishers, they work better than anything else I have ever tried.

Bob, I've never liked walnut media unless I had some really grungy range pick up brass. I use exclusively corn cob media, and Rooster Brite polish. I dribble about a capfull in my media (without brass) and run it about 3-5 minutes, them add the brass and let run for 2-3 hours. The walnut always left a finish like it had been bead-blasted with a fine media. I haven't used any now in probably 20+ years.

Several years back a friend of mine turned me on go the Lyman GREEN TREATED MEDIA. It works incredibly well with no additives at all. I believe it's treated Corn Cobb Media but what ever stuff they use to treat it never seems to wear out. I gave my remaining box of Walnut Media away.

I'm with chief38. I use the Lyman Green exclusively in my Lyman 1200 vibratory. And I have free access to all the walnut/pecan media I want, but rather use the Lyman stuff.

Same here. Once I tried that, over the walnut, I've stayed with Lyman Green.

I too use Lyman green for final polishing. I use walnut first as a cleaner.

Just one other little hint. Put a "used" dryer sheet in with the brass being cleaned, it will collect the fine dirt and dust in the media and keep it cleaned out. I only do this about every 10 or so sessions in the vibratory tumbler.
