6mm TCU
All,
I just purchased a rifle in this caliber. The problem is none of my books contain data for it. Do any of y'all know where I can find data for it or data for a comparable ctg, like 6x45 AI or .223 AI? I don't want to use 6x45 data because the case capacities are different. Thanks for the help.
Franz

The Thompson/Center Ugalde, or TCU family of wildcat cartridges based on the .223 case. I loaded for the 7mm.. here is one post I found on the 6. Handloading & Bench Testing The 6mm TCU Virgin Valley Contender Barrel

6mm TCU data is available in the Lee Modern Reloading handbook and also I found it in the Sierra Handgun Reloading manual 50th Edition.
Data is also available online for the 6mm TCU on the Hodgdon Reloading Data Center under pistol data.
I shoot the 7 TCU regularly. Lots of fun benched out of a Contender.
What type of rifle have you got?

Awesome, thank you. The two of the manuals I don't have...go figure.
Just picked up a Rem 788 that has been rebarreled for $345. Still need a magazine ($60 on ebay...ugh) and a scope. I'll probably put this together in a few months, as I have some projects to keep me occupied for the near future. I just couldn't pass up that rifle at that price.

Hornady 8th Edition , p. 793 in the handgun section. There was no data in rifle section, but this would be a place to start.

The 6x47 is based on the 222 magnum brass and start loads could be based on that as well. I believe the 6 TCU has more of a blown out shoulder than the 6mm/223 but data is out there for that as well. Just don't start with max loads. I shoot a 7 TCU and know that it and the 6.5 we much loved in the day.

The online source I like is Ammoguide Interactive. It requires a small dues each year but I'll bet there isn't a cartridge out there for which data can't be found. They have a demo function you can use to see if you would like it.

FWIW, there are some loads listed in the ACCURATE ARMS LOADING GUIDE #1 published in '94 if you need some additional powders.
I shot the .30 X .223 Apache in both rifle and handgun silhouette, using slower powders in the rifle than in the handguns.
My only caution is to start low and increase real SLOOOOW!

I was able to find some data in a few places in the handgun sections, after I remembered it was designed as a silhouette handgun ctg.
comparing Hodgdon's 6 TCU and 6x47 data, the TCU is hotter!
Since I'm new to forming brass, what steps so I need to take?
I was thinking it was like this:
1. Neck expand fired .223
2. FL size
3. Anneal (not necessary)
4. Light charge and fireform
5. Neck resize
6. Trim

OR you could do it the easy way - fire .223 REM ammunition in your 6mm T/C-U chamber. Presto - out comes fire-formed brass ready to resize and load. I did 100 cases for my 7mm T/C-U that way and lost none of them.

I used to shoot 7TCU in Metalic Silhouette some years back, and still have a 7X30 Waters barrel for my TC. I had often heard the 6TCU would make a good benchrest cartridge. Sounds like you have been given a lot of info to follow up on. Let us know your results.

I also have a 7mm T/C-U barrel for my T/C Super 14 Contender although I loaded mine with 120-grain hollow-points for windy day groundhog hunting. The 6.5s and more lately the 6mms have taken over the benchrest world and I see Hornady is now releasing a 6mm Creedmoor.
One of my technicians used to shoot at the Original Pennsylvania 1,000-yard Benchrest Club north of Williamsport and back in the 1980s, the 7mm and .300 magnums were all the rage up there. Today, I hear the 6mms and 6.5s rule the roost.
Having just obtained a Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor, I now have that caliber covered pretty well as I also have rifles in .260 REM and 6.5-.284 Norma. It's funny how the 6.5mm cartridges were so ignored stateside while they were and continue to be the darlings of European hunters of game as large as moose.

In 7TCU I go ahead and fireform my brass with full charge load. It will hold a full charge of powder anyway and I can't tell the difference. I'm sure 6TCU is the same way.
