I just got a 629-6 44 magnum and I'm thinking I read some where that it doesn't make a difference on large pistols primers can someone verify this for me one way or the other.

Depends on the powder used. I have successfully used standard large pistol primers with Unique, Universal, Blue Dot, 2400 and WC 820. When I used H110/W296 I used magnum primers...

Thanks my Lyman 50th said magnum for H-110, 296 and H-4227 but Hornady tenth said WLP but the only magnum power they have for 200 gr. is H-110

What they said. I've always been told use magnum primers for hotter loads i.e. 2400, H110; large pistol otherwise.

Allegedly the slower burning powders such as 2400 ignite better with Magnum powders. But I have not had any problems using regular primers with slower powders. And as stated, Winchester says their LP primers work in both standard and magnum loads. I have always felt that the main difference is that magnum primers have slightly thicker cups which can safely withstand higher peak chamber pressures.

...using magnum primers exclusively by dropping the powder charge back about .2 grains on loads tested with standard primers. It simplifies inventory and prevents mistakes.

I've used only standard lp primers.

However, I've used standard and magnum large rifle primers and there is a substantial pressure increase with the mag primers.

2400 doesn't need a mag primer. I only use them for slow ball powders like h110/w296.

I've successfully used Winchester large pistol primers (WLP) in loads ranging from Trail Boss in 45 Colts to compressed charges of IMR-4227 in 44 mag. They're the only large pistol primers I keep on hand.

In years past I did considerable comparisons between standard and magnum primers -- not a huge sample, to be sure but I checked more loads than most folks would, and kept a pretty good tab of results. Speaking with the vaguest generality, I found that in loads where magnum primers were recommended the magnums gave (slightly)higher velocities, whereas the standards gave more consistent velocities and, usually, better accuracy. Since highest velocities have never been my goal and since where I live I don't face problems like extreme cold, I've pretty much just stuck to the standard primers.

Winchester LPP are designated for both regular and magnum loads/powders.

Others have both a regular and a magnum primer. A slow burning hard to ignite powder uses a magnum primer for better ignition. A powder like H110/W 296 gets better ignition and performance with a magnum primer.

The powder load data specify what primer.

Can you get by with a regular primer ? Probably but it is not what is recommended. Can you use all Magnum primers, yes but on some powders you will need to reduce max loads a little.

They test them for a reason.

Alliant/Speer revised their position years ago to state that magnum primers should not be used with their current load data or high pressures will result & that standard primers significantly improved performance with 2400.

I use WLP primers for most of the magnum powders IE: Acc #9 , 2400 , Acc 4100/Ramshot Enforcer . When I went to W296 or IMR 4227 , then I use a full magnum primer , usually CCI 350 .

same here i use wlp and wlr in all mine, they burn hotter and work great,anybody have any advice on which reloading manual to use ? i have been using hornadys 9th edition and just picked up the 10th but some of the stats are different,don't know if i could use both or not,any info would be great

I have an unmodified 686 no dash that occasionally ties up with full house 2400 loads and Winchester standard primers.

Tried a batch loaded with CCI Magnum primers. 50 rounds later I had zero problems and a bloody patch worn on my strong hand thumb.

Supposedly the magnum primers have a harder cup that would resist flowing around the firing pin. Just my semi-educated opinion & I could be totally wrong.

My .44 Magnum I load with H110. That powder is definitely recommended to be used with magnum primers.

Winchester primers advertised to be for "standard and magnum" loads. I haven't noticed any difference as I work up loads sticking with one primer, nuttin' to compare them to. When I change primers I normally work up again...
