Question Use of magnum small pistol primers

I'm going to start reloading .38 special target loads and have 5 boxes of magnum SPP's that I'd like to use up.
I plan on using 148 gr cast HBWC bullets and Bullseye powder.
Would there be any issues in using up my magnum SPP's until I get some standard SPP's?

If your powder charge is already under recommended max., try the mag primers with the same powder charge and shoot a few groups at 25 yards. If you're already close to max, reduce your charge a little and shoot some. Maybe work back up a bit if there are no pressure signs. Chronographing the loads would tell you more than I can.

Shoot what's most accurate.

If you are using the typical Bunny Fart light loads normally used for HBWC, you'll never know the difference with the primers, according to my chrono. If you are for some odd reason loading HBWC hot, listen to rwsmith to be ultra safe.

You could always swap the Magnum Primers with a Re-loading buddy for standard ones - just a suggestion.

I've used Standard Primers in Magnum Reloads and all that happens is I loose around 30 - 50 fps of velocity. Like some have said here, you could reduce your load slightly - but the swapping idea is better IMO.

With the 2.7gr or 2.8gr load of Bullseye you will typically be using, you will have no problem using the magnum primers.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to offer your opinions/suggestions to my question. This site and forum is truly a treasure trove of experience and knowledge and I really appreciate being able to participate in it.

Now it's time to crank out some .38 target loads for my 686!

Frank

If you are not near max, no worries.

I bought a 1,000 SPM by accident and used them in 9mm, with Power Pistol. Shot fine, accurate and reliable. I never load max charges I'm always looking for mid range accuracy.

As usual I'm late to the party. Nothing left to do here since you already got good advice telling you to use them.

Go on the Calguns reloading swap & sell board. You'll find a taker in your area.

Magnum SPP were hard to find a short while ago. If you were in my area I would jump on a swap!

As has been said though, go ahead & use them. I would just buy more SPP & save the Magnums for when I needed 'em.
