Default Just when I found Alliant powder on the shelf.....

Found out this morning that Gander Mountain was closing 32 of its stores due to chapter 11 bankruptcy. 2 of those are here in Indiana-Merrillville and Greenfield. Was just last Oct. That I found Alliant powder in the Greenfield stores powder cabinet. Since then I have bought HP-38 and 4 more lbs. of Bullseye. I'm posting this here, since it deals with reloading components, and the first availability of Alliant powder in over 4 years in my area.

The store in Greenfield has been open 5 years or less, at least to my knowledge. Beautiful store, even though some of the prices are on the high side, sale items are priced pretty well. I was thrilled to find Alliant powder on their shelves at what is now the norm of $24.99/lb. but I've been able to use sales and discounts to buy at $19.99/lb. I hate to see any retailer go out of business, glad I got what I could. It's a 2 hour round trip for me, but I'll be going as much as I can till they close the doors or run out of powder.

I don't think there are any GM stores around here. At least, I've never seen any, or heard of any around here.

That being said, Alliant powders have been scarce in these parts too. I saw some BullsEye on the shelf at Cabelas in Okie City a month or so back, and snagged it just on principle.

I've pretty much replaced BE with other fast powders in my loading, just because of spotty availability. I'm sure I'll use it eventually, and powder ain't getting cheaper.

Nearest GM store to me is in Beaumont, TX, which is around 150 miles away at least. So I doubt that I will ever visit one of their stores.

Good for you to find some deals though on the powder.

Man, 10 of the 32 stores are in Texas. Including all of the Houston area stores...it's just the biggest city in the state, and the fourth largest in the country. Considering the three bigger cities are all in hostile territory (NYC, Chicago, LA) they are giving up one giant chunk of the market.

If you can't sell guns and fishing gear in Texas you need to consider a different line of work.

But most of the stores in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area will remain open. So, it seems they CAN sell guns and fishing gear to Texans, just not the ones living in Houston, Waco or Texarkana.

Also, to keep things in perspective for non-Texans, while Houston may be the largest city in Texas and fourth largest in the country, it's metropolitian area is only the fifth largest in the nation (after Dallas-Ft. Worth, which is fourth).

Well the one store they are closing in Houston has an Academy across the highway from it. The Academy parking lot is almost always filled with cars but GM across the highway has an almost always bare parking lot. I guess an empty parking lot is a big clue to not making squat for profits.
GB priced themselves right out of business. In order for any business to remain in business they have to be competitively priced.

I've always found Gander Mountain to be over priced and rather useless. To the OP I would suggest that you get on US30, take it east to I-71N in Ohio and take the first exit north of US30 and turn right. About 1/2 mile down US250 on the left you will find the finest reloading center in the entire midwest, that being Fin, Feather, and Fur Outfitters of Ashland, Ohio. Once there head for the basement and you will find reloaders heaven. BTW, if you browse around a bit you'll also find out why I have such a low opinion of Gander Mountain.

You are correct, if you measure by Metropolitan Statistical area. It seems odd to me that ALL the Houston stores are closing but NONE of the Dallas stores are. I'd think it would be more evenly dispersed, closing a few stores in each market. Is Houston that much more competitive than Dallas?

Surely there must be as many Academy's in Dallas as Houston. Houston does have Carter's Country (of "Fast and Furious" fame) which moves a lot of guns through their four locations. I don't know of a multi-location independent in Dallas but hard to believe that's what did Gander Mountain in. There seems to be plenty of one-location independent stores in each city. In the Big Box stores each city has two Bass Pro's, Dallas has two Cabela's and Houston only one.

Just struck me as very odd. It probably is really for a reason other than firearms sales of course. They sell other lines.

It might have nothing to do with the relative sales between the two cities at all and have more to do with getting out of their real estate obligations or some other business reason.

I am bemoaning the situation GM finds itself in, but the one I frequent (Dayton OH, a 50 mile drive for me) carries very little in the way of reloading supplies. I remember maybe a handful of bullets (all rifle) and I'm not sure they had any powder (no primers, what I went to get). I intend to visit the Fin, Feathers and Fur Outfitters store in Ashland OH. to check them out. Local news did report that our GM store is not one being closed, though I suspect the writing is on the wall for all of them.

I've mentioned the one in Texarkana. Lots of vets work there. It will be a loss for me, as it is an easy visit off I-30 as I pass by.

Don't think I have ever seen an Academy store parking lot anywhere near empty. They always have people running in and out of the store near me. Frank

Gander Mountain isn't all that bad, they once sold me a nice used 1948 K-22 for 350$, after repeatedly trying to switch me to a "new" springs and plastic "modern" gun that the clip held 15 rounds or whatever and had a new gun warranty...the kid behind the counter didn't have a clue as to what they had in the "obsolete used gun case"

Well made the trip to the Greenfield GM store yesterday evening (Friday). I received an e mail for $20 off any purchase of $50. Powder is $24.99 regular price, so 2 lbs. plus a bag of nuts nets me powder at $14.99/ lb. Bought the last 5 lbs. Of Bullseye and 1 lb. of HP-38 Would've bought some primers but all out of small pistol. Can't remember the last time I got pistol powder for $14.99 lb. And will probably never happen again

Gander Mountain has filed for bankruptcy. Who knows if they will emerge as a going business...

Bass Pro has agreed to buy Cabela's but the total sale was Bass Pro buys the stores, some bank buys the Cabela charge card business. The merger of the charge card business into the bank is under regulatory review, which is delaying the merger. The CEO of Bass Pro has said he plans to keep Cabelas and Bass Pro stores both open. I'm not skeptical of his intentions, but it seems to me that those three stores plus Field and Stream really overbuilt during the last five years. I am 20 minutes from a Bass Pro, 15 minutes from a Cabela's, 25 minutes from a Field and Stream, 40 minutes from another Field and Stream, and one hour from a second Cabela's and a second Gander Mountain. Plus numerous Dick's Sporting Goods. (I'm in the Northern Cincinnati area.) We cannot need so many!
