Remington .38 Wadcutters
I had notifications on Remington. 38 Wadcutters for over a year now...got an email the other day that they have been discontinued. What's the next best substitute?

Component bullets. I assumed posting in the reloading forum was self-explanatory.

You may wish to consider Hornady's 148 hollow-base wadcutters for reloading. I find that leading is minimized as long as velocities are low, i.e. 700 to 800 fps.
You will also find plated 148 grain full-wadcutters available. Remember...Google is your friend.
Good luck.

I've used both Hornady and Speer. For no good reason I prefer Hornady.

I'VE TRIED ABOUT ALL OF THEM . RANSOM REST TESTED AT 50YDS OUT OF MULTIPLE PPC REVOLVERS. IN ORDER OF ACCURACY
1ST REMINGTON 148GR HBWC
2ND STAR SPECIAL MATCH (NO LONGER MADE EITHER)
3RD ZERO 148GR SWAGED HBWC
TIED SPEER AND HORNADY
THAT BEING SAID THE ZERO WILL HOLD X RING AT 50YDS, ALL DAY LONG WITH A GOOD GUN AND LOAD.

I got the same notice. Major Bummer. Being sold in bulk, they were a bit cheaper than the Hornady's. The Hornady's have no cannelures, and are coated with a dusting of silica powder. The Zero's are probably closer to the Remington. I've shot plenty of Hornady's though, they are fine but a little slippery with the silica dust.

Both Hornady and Speer....
Both Hornady and Speer shoot better than I do.
There are some smaller outfits that sell swaged HB wadcutters. I have both Hornady and Speer 'in stock' so I haven't gone looking but I'll bet the prices are lower.
Both Hornady and Speer provide a 'dry' lube that works very well at low velocities.

I hate to hear the Remington loads have been discontinued. I have put up several boxes for my M52. I guess I can stop looking for them now. I have been shooting the Remington semi wad cutters a lot lately and have found stacks of them in my Ace store here. . .standard velocity. They shoot good for me but won't work in a M52.

I think I'll grab some Zero's before they disappear! The Great Wadcutter Shortage of 2017 is upon us!
The Hornady's are kind of pricey.

If you don't mind the homegrown variety you should try PC bullets.
King Shooters Supply | PC 38/357 148 grain, Double Wad Cutter, sized .357
They also have the non-plated version
I've loaded a few thousand for my 38 and 357

I ordered some from a site called Precision Delta (dot com). Haven't received them yet. You might give them a look. I don't like the coating on the Hornadys.

Like the Remington's (and 231),second choice Speer's, in two M52s/Ransom.
FWIW- Recent Remington factory WC loads were POOR in both guns.

Unfortunately, all of the ammo makers are heading towards two handgun product lines- one line of low quality "race to the bottom" range fodder and the other of designer boutique defense rounds that can be sold for $30 per a box of 20. The traditional lines such as Super-X, Express are being slowly eliminated. Take a look at a Remington, Winchester or Federal handgun ammo catalog from 1985 and probably 50% of the loads are now discontinued and the other 50% on backorder.

I didn't see them mentioned but I've had good results with the Magnus 148 gr. HBWCs. Sorry to hear the Remington bullets are being dropped...

If you are lucky enough to get a case of the Rem. 148gr ammo
you are doing well.
The only draw back with their ammo box is that it is of minimal height
and only a 148, flush seating bullet will fit in the ammo box !
A lot of company's have the "Generic box" that fits all ammo.
Any one try or like Meiser button points?

I do, but it has more to do with my state's political climate than any desire for the ultimate accuracy.

I highly endorse the Precision Delta bullets. Order their wadcutters, which are hollow-base like Remington's and Hornady's, with their Match Lube and you'll fall in love with them in short order. They aren't sticky with lube and there is no loose black stuff (graphite?) like Remington bullets wear - their lube is so invisible that I thought my first order might have no lube at all until I called them for clarification. And they shoot great!
Some people would prefer they could by 500 at a time and don't like that they only sell them by the box of 1,000 but never fear, you won't dislike them.

Either it's been a while since I was on their site or I just missed that option. But perhaps those complaining about buying 1,000 wanted more than 100...

Too bad about Remington discontinuing this particular bullet and the same in factory loaded ammo. I think Federal and Fiocchi still load this bullet in 38 special. Also a two thumbs up for the Precision delta bullets.

I just stocked up on 2500 of the Hornady 148 gr HBWC for my 52-2. I know they will shoot better than I can.

I'm not clear on if the OP is looking for a DEWC or a HBWC. I'm going to guess HBWC because I think that's what the Remington bullets are but there were cast bullets in some of the suggestions.
Zero bullets sell both DE and HB wadcutters. I have used the DEWC bullets but not the hollow based ones. I like the Zero bullets. As said above, the Speer and Hornady HBWC bullets are good too. I can't tell the difference in accuracy.
I happen to like the DSWC bullets better but that is just a personal preference. If you haven't tried them you might want to. There are many more choices with DEWC bullets and they can be driven slightly hotter which is good for small critters when in the woods.
Good luck finding a substitute, I know how hard it is to change after many years of happily using the same components.

I prefer Speer since they changed to the super clean coating. I liked the Hornady, but they are messy. I'll try the Precision Delta after reading these comments.

10 years ago I purchased a used Lyman DE 4cavity mold and casted thousands. I used them in my M52 and K19. Lubed them in Lyman lubricator and never had a problem with accuracy. Used 2.8GR BE.

I just loaded the last of my Remington's.. I have tried Hornady and Speer, not as good in my 52-2 as the Remington's. Also have some Winchester 148g HBWC that I found at a gun show. They are as good as the Remington's, but they are not to be found either. Will look at some of the suggestions myself. I have found DEWC and plated wadcutters do not shoot as well in my 52-2.

I think you should try the Zero Bullets first. Be sure to order the HBWC bullets because the sell DEWC bullets too.

That's all I shoot. Bullet moulds make you the master of your bullet supply. I refuse to be dependent on the factories for what I need. A $20.00 Lee mould can make a lot of bullets , that's cheap independence .
NOE makes just about any kind of hollow point mould you could want . They can be had with several different sizes and depths of points and a solid point pin as well. True they are more expensive but with one mould and three sets of pins it's like having 3 different moulds and not a whole lot more than 3 $20.00 Lee moulds.
I make it a point to have several moulds for all of my handguns for every style and weight bullet I might want to shoot. In 38/357 alone I have 14 moulds from 105 gr. to 173 gr., and that's not a lot, there are many to choose from.
Buy a mould and be free.
