Default Rounds will not fully seat in Ruger vaquero .45acp

I just bought a Ruger birds head vaquero 45 ACP and I went to go shoot it for the first time with my hand loads and their semi wadcutters and the rounds won't fully see in the chambers. The bullets function fine in my Polymer guns and my 1911's. There's about a millimeter left that the bullets need to go into the chamber So it seems that the edge of the wadcutter is were the bullet is seating in the chamber. I hope that makes sense. Should I start messing with the crimp? Crimp is .043

Straight crimp is used for .45 ACP, so the likelihood of a bulged case is small. Probably what is happening is that the bullet is bumping up against the forcing cone of the chamber. Ruger is known for tight chambers,I understand, so that could be your problem. Crimp, seems tight, as well.
First make sure that your chambers are squeaky clean, because crud sometimes builds up in there, and if that's not your problem, try seating the bullets a few thousandths deeper.

See if factory new ammo chambers. If it doesn't the chambers are not machined deep enough. If it does then adjust bullet seating depth on reloads accordingly.

I've had the same thing with my Rugers with the 200gr SWC H&G type bullets. Seat em with just a wee bit of the bullet shoulder above the edge of the case. Taper crimp to .469" and all should be well.

Factory and my fmj ball chambers so I guess it's gotta be the depth of the bullet. Swc seat about a fingernail thickness above case mouth so pushing it down flush wouldn't mess with the pressure too much??? I'm kinda new to reloading.

Do you mean the round is too long for the cylinder or the entire case won't fit in the cylinder? If that is the case then it won't make any difference how deep you seat it.

Also, has this brass been sized? New, unsized brass fits fine in my Bisley, but if I want it to chamber correctly in my Old Model Blackhawk I have to size it.

I'm thinking since fmj works fine and has been reloaded the same amount of times as the swc it's not case length so it has to be something with the actual swc bullet. I'm gonna seat then down a bit more and see what happens. I'll post the results thanks

I had this same problem with some of my .45 acp reloads...they'd fit fine in my S&W 1917 but not my Colt 1917. Problem seem to be with the roll crimp that I had put on them, so I ran the rounds through a Factory Crimp Die to resize and that fixed them.

I had a Ruger 45 convertible (45acp/45lc) and always had problems with the acps seating. The cylinder world often fail to rotate because of it. Very frustrating. As mentioned above, Ruger cylinders are very tight.
Good luck!

The driving band on the bullet is bigger in diameter than the throat of the cylinder. That is a good thing it helps accuracy. The round is head spacing on the bullet. Seat the bullet deep enough so the round headspaces on the case like it is designed to.

I have a revolver that will only fully chamber/ seat rounds loaded with cast bullets sized .451. Tight cylinder's !
Try sizing .451 or seating the bullet just a little deeper.
I had a box of Black Hills factory loads with .452 lead bullets , I had to add more taper crimp to get the bullet/case sized down .001 more before they would chamber.
AMT 1911 Hardballer has no problems with .452 , the revolver...no go , .451 was the maximum.

I agree with this notion. If it ain't 230gn FMJ, it's a crapshoot in any .45. Lead bullets typically run a larger OD, and not every mfr. feels that they are obligated to accommodate every conceivable bullet choice.

Hello, had the same problem with a Blackhawk convertible that a friend of mine owned that never had a problem with it. He shot only 230gr RN reloads and used a Lee Factory crimp die.
I on the other hand primarily shoot 200gr SWC in plated or coated. If I remember correctly I had the issue with the coated bullets. Do you have a case checker that you can also check your reloads in jus to see that they conform to those standards?
Also you may try a Lee Factory Crimp die on the ones that did not fit and see if that helps. And of course you are doing a taper crimp I assume.

Hi, Had the same problem with my Vaquero. I had reloaded the 45's for my 1911's. I had adjusted the sizing die to fit the 1911 which is a little looser than the Vaquero cylinder. I solved my problem by setting the sizing die down a little farther on the case. Sounds like a simple fix, but it worked for me. Hope it works for you. I am also running a tapered crimp.

Tapered crimp. Hornady dies. The plan is to seat them a little more till they are flush so they headspace off the round.

Default With all of my different 9mms.....

In trying to get reloads to function in ALL of my 9s I have to make some concessions. Having several compact pistols, the leade is very short and any little extra bit of bullet causes problems in some. I've got some 'smallball' bullets that STINK and have roughness in the coatings. Even when when loaded under 1.06", some of them don't plunk worth a darn in some barrels. No more of that for me.

So I seated a few bullets down further and they seem to be seating off the case now and the cylinder spits freely. Thanks for the help.
