Default # 45 ACP cases in 2 1/2 pound Milk-Bone canister

I was priming cases yesterday and had this empty canister handy. It held 680 cases. I have seen counts for coffee cans and 5-gallon buckets. Hopefully a contribution that may come in handy for you someday.

I don't know where I got this list but if you don't have access to a Milkbone canister but do have scales this might come in handy:

Rough number of empty primed brass per pound; May vary due to brand of brass. Not an absolute.

115 9mm
100 40 S&W or 357 sig
80 45 acp
100 38 spl
90 357 mag
145 380 auto
168 32 auto
75 .223 Remington (or any derivative such as 222 etc)
40 .308 Winchester (or any derivative such as 243 etc)
36 .30-06 Sprgfld (or any derivative such as 270 etc)

Approx. Weight per 1000 cases:
9mm, 59.46gr/ea, 117.7cases/#, 8.5#/1000

38spl, 68.06gr/ea, 102.8cases/#, 9.7#/1000

40s&w, 70.1gr/ea, 99.9cases/#, 10#/1000

.357mag, 78.3gr/ea, 89.4cases/#, 11.2#/1000

.45acp, 89.58gr/ea, 78.1cases/#, 12.8#/1000

.223, 95.28gr/ea , 73.5cases/#, 13.6#/1000

.44mag, 114.38gr/ea, 61.2cases/#, 16.3#/1000

50bmg, 865.26gr/ea, 8.1cases/#, 123.5#/1000

All weights are uncleaned fired cases with the primer remaining.

Individual case weights were derived using an average of mixed brass weights (except 50bmg)

So, if you picked up 8#s of 45 brass: 8# X 78.1cases/# = 625 cases+/-

If you use 1gal ziploc freezer bags to store your brass, each (full) bag contains:

9mm, 15.6#, 1836cases
40s&w, 12.2#, 1219cases
45acp, 11.4#, 890cases
223, 11#, 809cases

If you use 5gal buckets each full one will have

9MM = 8500-9000 pieces
.40 S&W = 7000-7500 pieces
.45 ACP = 3800-4000 pieces

A few more CASES per POUND:

.380: 145
.357 Sig: 96
.45 GAP: 86
.32: 168
10mm: 96
FN 5.7: 124
.25 acp: 260
.30 Luger: 120
.38 S&W: 120
.38 Super: 104
9mm MAK: 124
.45 Colt: 60
.30-M1: 100
.308: 40
.30-06: 35
7.62x39: 54
.50 AE: 48
.30-30: 52

When I run out of ammo boxes, I use the new clear plastic
59oz O-J bottles to hold my 9mm cases.
They have a nice BIG top for the cases to go in and out of.

Large Zip-Lock and brown paper bags , wear out over time.

I use my old ZEAL containers, Zeal is a once a day vitamin and mineral supplement. Me and my wife go through a jar once a month. We fight over the empties, she put in kitchen stuff, I use it for Brass and bullets.

I'm a fan of 3 lb coffee cans even though they are no longer available. They stack easily, the plastic tops can be marked easily and they hold a lot if brass.

I like the coffee cans too. I have about 30 or so full of brass..mostly 45 223 and 308 Surplus. Most of the 38 Sp brass is in 50 cal ammo cans except 9mm is in those 4 or 5 gal tubs with a snap on lid you can get at Wally World. I don't load much 9mm. I also went into Harbor Freight to get something one day and they had the ersatz 30 cal ammo cans on sale for 3 bucks. I bought 15 and put individual calibers in them of the ones I have the least brass. 22 H 221FB 222 32H&R 327 Fed 357 mag...etc I even have one full of 44 Russian.. One day soon I am going to get ambitious and clean all that brass. All that need it that is. I tried an experiment one time using a 1/2 coffee can of brass and filling it to 3/4s full of walnut shell media. Put it on one of the rolling tumblers and running it for an hour or two. Worked ok...but it needed a piece or two of duct tape.. Ask me how I know.

x3 on the coffee cans for all the same reasons. In addition, I use different colored cans for different stages of storage.
Red are for cleaned /RFI brass.
Green are for surplus brass that is not RFI and held in reserve.
Blue are for dirty brass waiting for processing.

Besides, my dogs would weight 600# each if I had to empty enough scooby snack jars to hold all my brass. :-)

Dog treat containers. Same deal as coffee cans, but clear plastic. Mark the tops--"Dirty 9mm", "Clean .45", etc.

I'm trying to figure out a source for similarly-size square containers, which would use storage space better than round containers.

My eight pound powder jugs a big and square.

Make a great anchor float for on the water, when salmon fishing, too !
Un-hook, chase the salmon and re-hook when done. Sweet.

Margarine (most brands) has switched to square tubs -- less product same price. Nice sneaky price increase!

At my local Walmart, I bought some ice cream that came in large square clear containers with snap on lid and carry handle. Don't remember the brand name tho it could be Walmart Great Value.
