Default Recipe for 223 load

Federal 223 case
Sellier & Ballot primer
26.1 grain of Varget
Sierra 69 grain Match King Bullet
2 thousandths crimp
2.26 OAL

We got a 1/2" group at 100 yards with 5 round fired. Only two holes show on the target.
Upper is daytona tactical 20" 1:8 twist Stainless barrel with a wylde chamber.

Nice.. thanks for the load data... just starting to load 223's now.

26 grains was too hot was it? I've researched and will be running 25.5gr of Varget with 55gr FMJ's.

If you have a 1:8 you just about have to have a Wylde Chamber with 75's and heavier!

I have one of the Savage 12 single shot's with a 1:9. With 75 A-max and 77 Berger VLD & Hybrids, I get away with a standard 223 chamber. Using Lake City virgin brass a Remington 7 1/2 primer and 26 gr Varget (and seated to the lands long). This gun and ammo earned the name "The M&M Gun", from picking off M&M's at 200+ yards. With the BR stock (pillar bedded) this set up does 3" at 1000 yards, with the factory varmint stock, it does 5" at 1000 yards. This load won't think about fitting in any type of magazine, and is really too much for AR actions!

For an AR plinking load, I loaded 26 grains WW748, CCI primers, match prepped mixed brass and old (1984) Winchester FMJBT 55 grain bullets. In my 1994 Bushmaster AR-15 A-4 with 6.5-20 Veri-X III Scope of a rest 3/8-1/2 inch at 100 yards. This load does better in my Cooper 21.

Stay safe!

Ivan

I use 25.5 grain of Varget with 55 grain Hornady FMJBT bullets.
I get good results with my Aero Précision 14.5" and 16" mid lengths.
Both have comps.

Using paper targets has its place, keeping records, showing friends, and competition to name a few. But guns were for shooting things in the real world of war or hunting. Aside from a few paper cuts, there isn't any danger in paper target shooting.

Enter the challenge of inanimate objects! Our dads and granddads shot bottles and cans at the dump! We being 21st century citizens, don't get the joys that previous generations got. I was at a small range one Saturday with 3 or 4 friends. It was lunch time and I had a container of Cheeze-its, one of the guys grabbed the container and ran to the 50 yard backstop and spread about 20 over a 10 yard area. We found that with 22 rim fire rifles with scopes it was pretty easy to hit Cheeze-its and the 5 or 6 pieces they break into when hit, Then we started an obsession of hunting down the crumbs. A group of men 50 to 70 years old hooping and hollering like 7 year old boys with a new frog!

If you could call it a sport, it progressed into shooting aspirin tablets hot glued to dark paper at 50 yards and paint balls at 100, to Neco wafers at 200 with center fire rifles. Then one day I forgot my lunch, and stopped at Mom's Market in Cooperdale, Ohio. I bought some chips, sandwiches and drinks, there on a clearance shelf, was a box of Mini, Frosted Mini wheat's from a few years before and a 1/2 pound bag of pastel M&M's. The Mini, Mini Wheat's were about 5/8" square and heavily frosted on one side. We threw about 30 on the dark earth of the 200 yard backstop and fire our first volley. When you hit an aspirin at 50 yards or a mini wheat at 200 you can tell a hit from a near miss by the small white cloud floating in the air. M&M's are a different story. You need a good spotting scope and a spotter that doesn't flinch when the gun goes off! The light pink, blue and green of pastel M&M's showed up on the white sand portion of the backstop better than the dark earth. My spotter was a early 1960's Green Beret, who just didn't flinch when loud things happened next to him! Navigating by small landmarks I would call a target M&M and he would get the spotting scope (60x) on target and watch. It was very calm that day and the breeze dropped to nothing! I shot at 7 M&M's during the lull and hit 7 for 7! A feat I have never repeated!

Does it match the excitement of downing an 5 ton bull elephant charging at you? I will never have the chance to find out (but I dought it!) My budget won't allow for dangerous game on the dark continent! But stalking the rouge Cheese-it or M&M is something I can afford.

223 and 223 AI are 2 extremely accurate rounds in good rifles! Very reasonable recoil and report. Load up some good ammo, and go make some excitement happen!

Ivan

Five bullets in 2 holes?

Uh, I see two more holes in the target, down in the green...?

Cheers!

My 1:8 Wylde chambered AR loves the 69SMK's. Although 26gr of Varget has shot the best groups, it also does well with CFE223 and R15. With the heavier 75 and 77 grainers it seems to prefer AA2230 which is hard to find around here.
