Default Alliant vs IMR

Alliant Bullseye, Red Dot, Unique vs

IMR Target, IMR Red, IMR Green ............

are they still the same powders but with a different name
and bottle design?

Thanks for the seven post..........
If I grab a bottle of IMR pistol powder , I will give a post on it vs Alliant powder.

They are chemically different.

Most of the Alliant (formerly Hercules) powders are double base (nitrocellulose + nitroglycerine), more energetic, faster and hotter burning.
Extruded IMR propellants are single base (nitrocellulose).

I would think probably not. IMR more than likely matched the burn rate and maybe the density so that you can use the same powder bushings. Is the IMR stuff also a flake powder like the Alliant ones. I don't think that this is a case of these all being made in the same plant (St. Lucie) in Florida as all of these Alliant powders are made in Alliant's own plant in Virginia. Once Alliant gets it's stock back up I would think that these IMR powers wouldn't get much traction. Just my $.02.

No.

They represent a foray into the very lucrative market for pistol and shotshell powders the "Dot" powders have dominated for years. They are formulated to have similar characteristics and application to the "Dot" powder of the same color, but as DWalt has already explained they are not identical.

From the IMRPowders web site:
Shotgun & Pistol Powders

"For shotshell usage, powder densities are similar to competitor data and handloaders may use the same bushing charts. Most shotshell data is similar, but IMR recommends always consulting Hodgdon Reloading | Home for the most accurate, up-to-date data. For pistol usage, pistol data is materially different from competitor data with lower charge weights and higher velocities at maximum pressures. IMR recommends always consulting Hodgdon Reloading | Home for the most accurate, up-to-date data." [Emphasis Added]

IMO, Yes.
They even kept the dots in.
All but target, which I am not sure.

So far as I can determine, the new IMR pistol powders have not been identified as being single or double base. They talk a lot about "new technology" without explaining anything about what that "new technology" is.

Alliant and IMR have completely different owners (Vista Outdoors and Hodgdon respecitvely). IMR introduced the new powders to compete against Alliant's powders. Like hdwhit said the powder are interchangeable for shotgun loads but not handgun loads. For pistol loads I imagine the applications are similar but the load data will be different.
