Default SW 500 reloading advice please.

Picked up a 500 in 4 inch and have collected all the nick knacks to load on my Dillon. I have a box of Hornadys FTX 300gr and a pound of Power Pistol. I see Alliant shows a max load of 27 grains with berry's 350grain bullet. I'm thinking 27gr with the lighter bullet would be just about right to start. Ideas or prior experience with power pistol and the 500? Thanks

I just submitted a post about loading for the 500. I used 25 grains of Power Pistol under a Berrys 350gr. Since I used a different primer than Alliant specified (Winchester LRM) I backed off a bit. I like Power Pistol a whole lot more than 300MP, though I haven't chrono'd it yet. Definitely a lot cleaner burning. Less blowback on my face too - which I didn't mention in my post - I could feel more coming my way with the 300MP than the PP.

Going to try Lil' Gun and H110 next. Hopefully I will get this 'light strike' situation figured out too.

I'd probably back off a little especially if using a different brand primer. Then work up. I'm a little conservative that way. :-)

I've used it with many bullets in the 500. It's great for moderate loads. Just be extra careful to not double charge a case with lighter loads, since it's very fine. (27gr=57% of an empty case)

Hornady lists a max load of 28.1gr/Power Pistol with their 300gr FTX bullet. I've used 26.6gr with it without issue.

Also lighter charges, down to 18gr in these. Power Pistol is not position sensitive.

I ended up loading 26.5 grains of power pistol under the ftx 300. I crimped three rounds , high, center and low on the cantulure (spelling?). I think my crimp is tight enough but I'm going to my lgs tomorrow and have the experienced shop reloaded take a look. Not sure where you found the 28.1 data but I'm 94.3% of that so should be good to go. I want a healthy range load for now and later i will get some heavier bullets and lil' gun powder after I get more proficient with this pistol.

Well, I took a few of the new loads to the range. I fired a warm factory load with one of mine in the next cylinder. Pulled it out and it had crept forward about .05 of an inch. Ended up firing all three of the pistol powder loaded rounds and recoil was mild (in comparison) to stout factory. Another grain and tighter crimp will make for some nice range ammo.

Just be careful and not load too much charcoal lighter fluid. You might burn all the hair off your hands.

Problem with plated like that, no cannelure to roll crimp into. They will walk.

I seat plated/no cannelure bullets in my reduced 500 loads to the ogive & use a tamper crimp. At that slightly smaller diameter (~.002-.003") the case hold mine just fine. These are well below max. pressure so the deep seating doesn't make a substantial difference.
