It's primarily a powder for reduced power cast bullet rifle loads. It was discontinued a couple of years ago but remains highly prized by many cast bullet shooters.

What cartridge do you want to use it for? Cast bullet handbooks have plenty of 4759 data.

It's a great powder for reduced loads even with jacketed bullets. I have worked up reduced loads in almost every caliber I shoot. It works very well when propelling bullets in the 1900-2100 fps range. No reason to beat yourself to death when just punching paper.

Here's a link to an older IMR powder manual. It has loads for most cartridges and bullet weights using IMR4759.

The name of this propellant is S.R. 4759, not the other way around. The current maker is IMR, successor to DuPont. In the old days when these propellants were made by DuPont it was I.M.R. for Improved Military Rifle. S.R. stands for Sporting Rifle. As it stands now all of the S.R series have been discontinued. 4759 for something like the third time!

S.R. 4759 is an excellent powder for many original black powder cartridges like .45-70, .38-55, etc. It is usually listed in loading manuals as simply 4759. It shouldn't be at all difficult to find data for it. You may have to find some older loading manuals, at least 20 years old, to find much however. Older manuals can usually be easily found at gun shows.

I have used it in reduced 22-250 rifle loads with a 55gr bullet
also the 30-06 with the little 100gr plinker for nice 50-100 yard loads.

You can use it in 38 special and 357 magnum if you have any of those..........

Eight pounds of powder will last you a long time !!

When I heard that it was being discontinued,I bought everything I could find.I use it almost exclusively in my Sharps 45-70 with cast bullet loads;with heavies I might add(425 to 535gr.)
I've checked the loading charts and while it could be used in large magnum handgun calibers,I found that it is not too efficient(too slow burning) and thus not very accurate. But your findings may vary on that point.
Since it is very usefull with cast bullet rifle loads and if you don't cast or use cast bullets in rifles, you can opt for one of the next 2 options:
A)use it for reduced loads under jacketed bullet loads or
B)make a donation to Qc Pistolero Fund

Joking aside,a clean and usefull powder;doesn't meeter good through powder dispenser but at the price you got it,hey!what the heck!

SR4759 is/was a really truly great powder.
It was always more of a specialty item, though. If you're into cast bullets in bottleneck cartridges, it is/was usually one of, if not the best choices.
It has an unfortunate history of spotty production, regularly discontinued without warning.
I've used it for a bunch of cast bullet loads in old "mil-surps" such as Lee Enfield, Swiss K-31, Mauser 98, etc.
It's also great for silhouette pistol, if you shoot T/C contenders in cartridges like 30-30, 357 Herrett, etc. (again, with cast bullets)

One of it's great virtues is it's predictability, stability and safety in low pressure loads. Pressures build slowly, so working up loads is no problem, at least if your goal is mild cast loads.
For virtually any 30 cal bottleneck cartridge, once your velocity range is roughly 1250-1450 fps, you'll get good results with 150 gr. gas check bullets.
I've found 14-14.5 gr of SR4759 to be a good place to start in 303 British, 308, 30-06, 7.5 x 55, etc.
If you like plain base bullets, drop the load down to maybe 10-12 gr. Velocity goal should be lower than for gas checks.
BE SURE TO CROSS-CHECK LOAD DATA!
What worked for me might be different for you, so play it safe! There's tons of data out there for specific cartridges.
I've heard of people going higher, and use SR 4759 for jacketed loads, but I think there are better choices for that.

Best Regards,
Jim

PS: Usual disclaimer for load data. Use at your own risk.

The two things I dislike about 4759 are that it is discontinued and could probably bridge the Grand Canyon. Only my B&M measure can throw consistent charges of that stuff. Neither the Hornady, the Ohaus, or the Redding can do it.

Default Speer number 9

My Speer number 9 reloading manual has a lot of loads for 4759. I use it for 30-06 loads that feel like shooting a .22. I shoot 110 grain plinkers and spire points because they are comparatively cheap. I also use lMR 4895 because it is GREAT for reduced loads.

If you can be a little more specific about how you want to use it, I'd be glad to supply you with what info I have.
