Default 38 DEWC and BE86

Is anyone loading 38 using 148 grain DEWC and BE86 powder?

What loads are you using?

thanks

Pete

soon..........

I have 357 magnum and 38 +P loads to chrony with BE-86 first.

Maybe the list of bullets in a 2" J frame snub nose ?

Then I will be testing 500 BBwc that I just received , since I normally
shoot the soft 148gr HBwc bullets.

Six powders plus B86 but I will be doing some Guestament loads
since Alliant is a little short on load data for under maximum loads.

I find B86 close to Unique in the 9mm......
as mentioned, no 38 cal. loads as yet.
Go a little more with starting loads, since you don't need a stuck
bullet right off the bat.

Good luck

Since the BBwc can be pushed harder, since it does not have a "Skirt"...........

I found one old note that stated 2.8grs of Red Dot at 660fps.
This is probably out of a M19-5 6", since I do not recall shooting
a BBwc through a J frame snub nose.

My guestament figures right now are.........
3.6 up to a maximum of 4.2grs of BE-86 powder but they will NOT
be tested in a J frame........ a K or heavier frame is the way I go with unknown data, in 38 spl. loads.
Once I have a number to work with, against other data I will raise or lower the charges.

Stay safe.

Oddly Alliant does not list any load data for 148gr bullet in 38spl with BE86?
I have used it with my 158 SWC's and it has been great.

The std load for eons was 2.7 grs of Bullseye . When I shot full 38spl wadcutters (148gr) I used 3.5 grs of Red Dot . The faster burn powders have always been considered best for a full wadcutter . I did read sometime back about a guy using IMR 4227 . If I remember correctly he used 8grs under a 148gr wadcutter . Now THERE'S a slow burning powder. He said the accuracy was fantastic , lot of unburned powder and it was pretty expensive using such an expensive powder and so much also . Guess it was all he had at the time . I'm not recommending it , just recounting the story .

I contacted Alliant about a year ago about load data for 148 gr DEWC (and 32 S&W Long) and they replied no intent to test for data for either with BE-86

Pete;

you do the 148 and I will see about the +P and Mag stuff........
maybe we can meet in the middle.

Just that the weather is the pits in Nevada right now, for testing.

I'd start with the load data for the 158gr DEWC. With two bullets of the same type and construction but different weights, the heavier bullet will always take a lighter powder charge, so using the 158gr data with the 148gr bullet will be perfectly safe - especially since the 148's are only about 6% lighter than the 158's.

WOW!IMR4227 accurate for shooting .38Spl WC.I think I've never heard anybody badmouthing that powder accuracywise but this use is certainly beyond its normal range!

I have use w571 with 148gr lead in my old K19 6" that was quite accurate.

I stopped using IMR4227 in my J frame revolver after one outing
where the slow powders unburned powder flakes made it impossible
to turn or remove my cylinder from the housing, due to "Crud" build up.

I had to drive home and clean it and remove the cylinder screw
to pull the yolk out, in order to remove the cylinder !!

HS6 is the slowest powder that will now go into my snub nose loads.

Made it to the range today. 4.2 of BE86 with SNS coated Full wadcutters were outstanding very accurate with punch, very clean shooting . I domt have a chrono so I dont know the vel. These were shot out of my 3 inch 64.

Next im ging to try 4.4 grains
And try them out of my 60-9 357
