Default Anybody has ever seen that before?

This morning,a good friend of mine was shooting just next to me.He reloads on a single stage press and likes to load on the light to medium side.He always goes for accuracy and doesn't give a darn about power.
He was shooting a 2'' model 31(.32 Long). The bullet was the swaged round nose.On one shot,he showed me the brass...with part of the bullet still wedged in the case. The center part of the bullet was shot away.
My first reaction was:it was a hollow base''.But no;it was a flat base.I looked at the primer and it didn't show a sign of pressure.Neither was the case(even though I wasn't expecting any;the .32 Long doesn't operate at high pressure).
My only guess is that there was a flaw in the making of the bullet.Anybody has ever seen that or have a theory about it?

Never seen that! I'd speculate that a void was present in the swaging stock, and ended up pretty much centered in the finished bullet. So the "bubble" actually shot out in two or more pieces. But I'm only guessing.

I'm not sure how they make the stock that gets swaged. If they roll it like taffy (using metal plates, not hands!) I could imagine a circumferential unbonded layer. But again, just a guess.

Wow, that sounds pretty darn strange to me too. I've never seen anything like that either. I wish you had gotten a couple of pics of that, just for us to see this.

As to what happened, I have no idea. Maybe there was a void in the wire that the swaged bullets were made from. I think they get this lead in a wire form and cut it to make a swaged bullet, but I'm not sure.

The two explanations above make sense to me. I have heard of jacketed bullets separating, but never a cast or swaged. I have heard the old half jacket Speer pistol bullets could do this, but again, never seen it.

That same phenomanon was posted here a few months back with a swaged HBWC.

I tried finding it. I remember the OP was an Australian LEO, who posted pics the slug with the center blown out like a miniature blow torch cut through it. Hopefully he chimes in.

When it comes to using my phone to take photos,I kinda have the brain size of a dinosaur...peasize!No,I didn't take any photo and yes I should have.Stupid me!
I too came to the conclusion that there must have been a void in the lead wire bit with which the bullet was punched.
The fact that it wasn't a hollow base is quite intriguing though!

If it was my buddy I would give him a hard time and tell him to ease up on the crimp.

Kiwi Cop?

In any case, yes, sounds like a void.
