Looks like Turkish, Egyptian or Iranian ammo, without a side view I'm guessing 7.92 Mauser.

Measure the bullet with micrometers to narrow down the guesses...

I've seen Turkish, Pakistani and Greek surplus 30-06 ammo.

7 & 8mm Mauser ammo, the brass is 57mm (2 1/4") long. 30-06 ammo the brass is 63mm (2 1/2") long. Just for the record, 308 ammo the brass is 51mm (2")long. But their rims are all the same diameter!

The year of manufacture "02" in arabic numerals suggests manufacture in an Arabic speaking country but the arabic script isn't something I recognize.

That sounds about right! In that time frame they used a rifle in 8x57, that was a nock-off of the FN 49, only it jammed badly if dirty. Just what you need in a dessert country!

Definitely an Egyptian 7.92mm Mauser cartridge. I have several 50 round boxes having a similar Arabic headstamp. At that time the Egyptians were using the "Hakim" semiautomatic rifle (unlike the FN49), very much like the Swedish AG-42b Ljungman except for the caliber. The Ljungman was in 6.5x55mm. Lots of those rifles and ammunition for them were captured by the Israelis during the 6 days war, and eventually found their way into the international surplus arms trade.
