Default Range time

Was at range this week. I was sighting in my Henry rifle in 357 mag with some 180 grain MBC RNFL using 13.5 grains of H4227 powder. When I got finished I went to the pistol range and shot about a dozen of those rounds in my S&W 686 +P 3" revolver. Not bad! Accuracy was good and recoil was ok; not as bad as some of my full magnum commercial rounds. The cases were filled almost to max under the 180 grain bullets. Max load was 13.7 grains.

That is nearly an identical load I used in my Marlin 357, in the early 80's. It was a very accurate load in the rifle, but in the 4" Model 28, it was incredible! I used the Hornady 180 Jacketed Soft Hollow Point. I would buy 10 boxes and get 10% off and free shipping from Midway back then!

I came home from work one Friday night, and this fat rabbit was helping himself to my garden. I ran in the house, and that ammo and the 28 were the first gun/ammo combo I came to. I went back towards the garden but kept some buildings between us. The only safe shooting lane I had left me 50 yards short of the garden, but I took the shot. Removed his head completely, but didn't ruin any of the good eating!

My brother had a Model 15 "Combat Masterpiece", he used 146 grain DEWC's that were a Bullseye target load in it, I would regularly beat him with this gun and ammo combo. (My 28 is ported and has an action job you wouldn't believe!)

In the long run, I believe you will love your load!

Ivan

Mike

Was this scoped or were you using the iron sights? How hard was it to adjust the iron sights (hammer and punch?)

The 4227 powder family(IMR and H)is very underated as far as accuracy is concerned. It only gives between 50 to 100FPS slower velocity to others like H110/W296 but is always accurate in the trio of magnums.

Leupold 3x9 scope. Using open sights with my old eyes is futile. 😄
