Looks like an Extreme brand bullet? That recess near the nose of the bullet??? Looks like something crimped on it there oddly?

Man that one didn't go far at all, I would think light powder charge? Good of you to be paying attention and stop before the next round, glad to see you and gun are fine

Yup. An Xtreme 158gr crimped by the canelure.

I too thought the bulge at the tip was odd. But it could've been the tool i used to smack it out. Too bad i didnt take the rod with me to the range. :/

Jacketed bullets will do that when loading bare bones fps loads.
Most data starts out at 820fps with a 158 gr bullet.

Good thing you realized what it was before you pulled the trigger a second time.

Had a squib load a while back in my M36...burning up old ammo and just plinking. Bullet ended up halfway into the barrel and half in the chamber...locked it up solid.

Very rare indeed but when that happens even the best revolvers become awkward clubs

Glad nobody (or fine revolvers) got hurt in either of our cases

This one was a 3.8g Winchester 231. 660 fps. So, bare bones - anemic load. I had only started using this load months ago and only made 2-300 rounds?? 38 special.

Lou, my favorite "powder puff" .38 SPL range load is nearly the same. I use 3.8 grains 231 and roll crimp in the groove. The only difference is the projectile. I use 158 Grain LSWC from Missouri Bullets.

Are your bullets jacketed or plated?

A number of years back I was letting a son-in-law (now ex) fire my prized SAA. I was using light loads and told him if the bang was any different NOT to fire the next round. You guessed it bang bang poof BANG. The bulge in the barrel was enough to make a grown man cry.

Fortunately I was able to find a smith that could put a new barrel on it and it was like new.

The one I did lodged the same way , halfway into the forcing cone and half way in the cylinder....that probably saved my young ignorant self from doing anything really stupid, like pulling the trigger a second time.
I have never forgotten that little lesson....make double sure sure each case has 1 and only 1 charge of powder and stop if something feels or sounds amiss !

This one was an Xtreme plated 158gr 38 special. Its a nice load and i had shot a couple hundred before. Something was definitely wrong. Roll crimp also. (Or so i thought. Gotta check the press now)

Ouch, it could have been allot worse though. Now to go figure out how your loading process allowed that load ( or lack thereof ) to get by. Maybe a different powder? Light on the press?.....
FWIW: I find Trailboss great for light loads. Even on mouse fart loads, it fills the case like cornflakes so it's easy to spot when somethings off.

Glad you caught the squib in time.

I've he three squibs in my lifetime. All three were in my LCP using range reloads. Needless to say I don't use their ammo anymore. I don't shoot .380 enough to warrant reloading it myself. So factory ammo for that little gun from now on.

These cases are deep tho. It would have to be filled to the top almost to see.
I loaded 150 that day. This happened on the last box. The previous box was loaded and fired through moonclips on a different gun.
It had to have been a distraction or maybe the dies or adjustment were moved.
Can't check the dies as I have another set on.
The shame is I took out a gun I hardly use.

Dunno. Just something I'll have to check later on. I hardly load specials now.

Glad you were able to avoid a "bigger" problem.

I had (2) squibs working up 45 Colt +P loads in my SRH 454 using AA#9. All the unburnt powder was packed in behind the bullet which was stuck just about where your's was. Turned out magnum primers were the answer.

I can see some powder still on your bullet so it wasn't a "primer only" load. Maybe a light charge or bad primer? I doubt the crimp, or lack of, would have any affect on fast powder like W231 igniting properly.

Hopefully that will be your last squib ever.

SQUIBS ! YECH !!! I've had only two in over 50 years and many thousands of rounds of shooting. Both were factory load .38 plinkers. The most recent ( about 6 months ago) being 130 gr. Fiocchi, and fortunately, on both occasions, the squib occurred on the last round of a 5 shot rapid fire drill with a J frame.

Just a parting note;

I use more w231 powder than that load of yours, when I shoot a soft 158gr LRN out of my 38 J frame snub nose.........

which I will never shoot out of my 6" barrel 38's, due to more friction down the barrel, before exiting.

In that picture, that barrel looks pretty long ?

Lou..l use 12gr of 2400 and a Berry plated 158gr swc for my 357

plinking loads. My old Lyman manual claims around 1000fps in my 686

Competitor... No chance of a double charge either..

For ignition 2400 likes most any type primer.. l typically use small pistol

primers... Most any will do tho...During the ''Great Primer Famine'' a few

years back l used Small Rifle Primers with great success in my pistol ctgs.

Never a misfire either or squib either...That extra flame from the rifle

primers served me well...
