Default Match sp primers vs standard sp primers

Been trying to pick up Federal sp primers wherever I travel and ran across some Federal Match sp primers. Didn't have many, so I bought them anyway. What is the difference in match and standard? I would guess in someway supposed to be better than standard, but these were not priced higher.

They are supposed to be more consistent in the mixture used.

If they are priced the same.. hey, go for them.. If more.. standard are just fine.

At one time CCI pulled it's 22 match ammo as a run of regular. It means usually they were made to minimal variations from standards.

If anything, the only difference would be better quality control during production.

All the 308 guys like them but I tried a few in my 1903 and they did not impress me in the test that I did with 150, 165 and 180 hunting bullets.

Guess they are not for bolt actions...................

As for pistol and revovlers;
I never got better results with match or magnum primers over std. stuff.
Maybe the high dollar weapons that have had a lot of work
done to them, might know the difference?

I did tons of primer test with my old K19 when I was younger...
just a waste of powder, in my "Stock" weapons.

If by chance you find a "Magic primer"............. Great.

I have never used anyone's match SP primers, but I have tested .223 performance with bench rest Remington SR primers against standard Remington SR primers. I saw no significant differences in MV or grouping performance.

As I have mentioned on previous occasions, I have for many years used SR primers for loading handgun calibers requiring small primers, very seldom do I use SP primers except for .32 and .380.

I've never heard of anyone using small rifle in handgun loads! Do you see any difference as far as pressure, velocity, etc? I just looked at some sr I picked up by mistake not reading box when buying 5 boxes and they appear to be same size, so now I'm asking, can there really be much difference?

There is not. I have tested for difference and never saw much. Average MVs with identical loads from the same guns are indistinguishable.

I started using SR primers back in the late 1960s. One of my employees was a serious competitive Bullseye pistol shooter. He always used SR primers in his .38 Special reloads for his K-38.

I believe the main difference between SR and SP primers is the primer cup thickness, as SR primers are made to withstand higher pressure. There might be a problem with the use of SR primers in some revolvers if, as some do, the hammer spring has been lightened for a lighter DA pull, as the SR primers may be less sensitive. But I have never had ignition problems in using SR primers in any handgun.

One caution. One should not attempt to use LR primers in reloading large handgun calibers. The LR primer is thicker (top to bottom) than the LP primer, and the primer will protrude above the case when fully seated. SR and SP primers are dimensionally identical, so that interchangeability problem does not exist.

All that may be true, but I would verify it with manufacturers before considering interchangeability.

I have been told that Federal Match Primers are made with exactly the same materials as the standard primers

They are run on the "newest or most consistent" machinery tended by what they consider their best operators.

In their Going Out Of Business Sale the local Gander Mountain had Federal Gold Medal Match Large Pistol Primers marked down to $23/1000.

I like these.

I bought all they had and all the LP Magnums at the same $23/1000

Sadly, there was no Small Pistol of any type or brand.

I use a lot of Fed primers . For 38 special target loads I see no difference in group size between the Fed 100 & Fed GM100M . I also use the Fed 155 LP mag primers for 41 & 44 mag shot from lever action rifles . In revolvers of the same calibers I get better accuracy from either the Fed 150 or Win LP primers depending on powder used . In 45acp target loads I see no difference between the Fed 150 or Win LP primers . The only time I recall a marked difference was with a Win 70 target rifle in 308 Win . A Rem 9 1/2 LR primer reduced group size by a good bit over CCI BR2 primers . In larger cases I use the Win LR primers .
