Crimp Die Hanging up

Quick question, I have not had this happen before. I have been reloading .45 ACP 230 gn with no issues. I had recently purchased 230 gn Rainer bullets and started using them. The funny thing some will hang up in and out of the crimp die. Some worse than others. Im pretty sure that the bullet size is inconsistant. Using a carbide die so no lube is needed.

Wondering if they are still safe to shoot in my hand gun.

If your cases are about the same length and within specs......
have enough belling to accept a bullet to seat inside the case....
and they are "Sticking" on the final seating process........

probably a dirty die or different bullet dia.

Just keep on stroking, no big thing.

I don't understand? How can the bullet hang up outside of the crimp die? On what?

I've noticed the same thing with Lee dies and MBC .45 ACP bullets. I cleaned the die, which reduced it somewhat, but it still happens.

It's just enough of a bump to be noticeable and a little annoying.

I think he is bulging the case below the crimp because of size differences between bullets. I would try backing the die off a little and making sure it is clean.

Correct taper crimp diameter at the CASE MOUTH is 0.469" +0.002", -0.000 . A dial caliper is needed because the anvils on a micrometer are too large. If your crimp die is set correctly for length of crimp and diameter of crimp, you should not notice the "hang up". I do not sort my range pickup 45 ACP brass, nor do I trim the length.

I believe that the inconsistentency is in the bullets causing a bit more buldge in the case as it resulted in 12 out of 100 that had that issue. The others had no issue at all. Thanks all for the advice

I get the same hang up your talking about on the way in and out with 45acp more than the other calibers. I believe it is the projectile and case both are just a tiny bit too big in circumference. I notice seems to happen more-- the more time the brass has been shot. Once fired doesn't seem to hang up at all then each time fired it gets a little worse. Just the case being ever so slightly bulged out from the pressure of propellant. The die is just giving you further crimp on lower part of projectile. A non issue for me cause it all seems accurate and fires well time after time till a split is created on case mouth then into garbage.

The Lee carbide factory crimp die will size any case bulge below the crimp.

You only need enough taper crimp the close up the case mouth belling to streamline the case mouth.

The dies instructions tells you to turn the adjustment knob 1/2 turn after contact with the case mouth for a light crimp.

And excessive taper crimp will bulge the case and damage the bullets plating.

Bottom line, a taper crimp is used to streamline the case mouth and is not used to hold the bullet like a roll crimp.
