Magma 158 gr SWC vs other SWC's
Most of the cast bullets guys, Dardas, Acme, Missouri, Bayou, Oregon Laser, etc, cast 158 gr SWCs with Magma molds or at least a mold duplicating the Magma profile. These molds throw a beveled base bullet probably to ease manufacturing.
With your experience, how do these Magma SWCs compare relative to accuracy with more traditional SWCs as Lyman 358156, 358477, RCBS versions, H&G 51, to name a few? Are the Magma's SWC's more accurate or less?
I find the Magma SWC to be comparably accurate with our tried and true Lyman's, RCBSs, H&G SWC's.

It might depend if the base of the bullet is flat, beveled or even concave, in design
to how it will shoot out of a certain weapon.
I have had different impact, fps and group sizes with just using different
brands of 158 gr beveled bullets in my revolvers, due to design and hardness.
Toss in a different shape and anything can happen.
Just depends on the weapon.
My 2" loves a LRN while the 6" likes the Lswc with a little more speed.

I find each bullet style a rule unto itself. Generally though, a good ftal base will beat a good bevel, imo.

Out of 70+ molds I have two beveled bases. There is a reason besides not making a mess when I lube, it is accuracy. Commercial casters like beveled bases because they stick less often. I find it interesting that I have seen few beveled base rifle designs. That should tell you something about accuracy.

I have not done extensively testing on the different SWC molds but from general shooting i see no difference in accuracy. The beveled base bullets are easier to start in the case but that's about it IMO.

In my experience...
In my experience setting the expander die properly really can make a big difference in the ease of seating various bullets in the various calibers... Especially as far as differences in the SWC bullet designs are concerned.
That's why I really prefer Hornady's expansion die design over LEE's: I appreciate the LEE's "powder through" feature, but I really don't use it, yet...
For ease of bullet insert into the case, reducing any possible "shaving" of lead, plating or bullet coatings & establishing really good neck tension I find the Hornady design much superior. Best lock rings out there, as well!
Cheers!

I avoided the dreaded bevel based bullets my whole life....I had always read a flat base was best !
Then I was given 2500 commerical cast BB boolits cast from Magma machines in 9mm , 38/357 and 45 acp. I avoided them for a while but one day decided to prove how much better my hand cast flat based bullets were.
The targets busted that myth all to heck.....they shot just as accurately and didn't lead the barrel. I could see NO difference and that was a blow to my careful hand casting ego big time.
I still cast my own but will use free Magma cast bullets any time !
