Default 45 Auto Rim in 45 Colt

A member on a post I read made mention of using auto rim cases in a 45Colt gun. Never thought about it. Next poster stated that this is a no go.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks, Bob

It is a no-go.
Rims of AR are too thick, for one thing.

Thanks! If it was possible, I could use them in my JM & 25. I have plenty of ACP & Colt brass now. Bob

You would have answered your own question by trying to load an AR case in your .45 Colt and tried to close the cylinder! Or turn it if it is a single-action. Unless of course you don't have a .45 Colt, then what difference does it make?

Unless you don't have any 45 auto rim to try in your .45 Colt, and don't want to buy a box of uncommon (read expensive) ammo just to try it - then the reason for asking the question makes perfect sense.

You might enjoy having the option of using your JM like a standard revolver with Auto Rim brass. That's what Auto Rim brass was created for. It's rim is thick enough to fill up the space normally filled by the moon clips.

I do have a 45 Colt. Do not have 1 piece of 45 auto rim brass. Bob

If you don't have any Auto Rim brass why do you want to know? I'm being serious and curious, not wiseing-off. Is it the shorter case that interests you? If so you can use 45 Schofield brass.

All I shoot in my 25-2 is AR.........I don't mess with moon clips. A friend of mine has a Ruger Blackhawk convertible with a 45 Colt, 45 acp and a 45 AR cylinder that he had made with recessed chambers for the AR round.

I shoot AR in my one 625 that is chambered for 45 acp but those AR shells will not work in my other 625 that is chambered in 45 colt.

Short brass was a trend in cowboy shooting a while back. They would trim 45 Colt brass to 45 ACP length and use an ACP load for their SAA rounds. I never saw an advantage, and that is a lot of case trimming! Some lever actions will feed properly with 45 Schofield ammo (my Rossi 92 & Marlin 1894 CB both do), but I never mess with ACP length ammo. Depending on the tube magazine capacity, Schofield length brass gets you one extra shot for a 10 round tube and 2 extra for a 14 round. I have found that comes in handy upon occasion! Some 1973's will work and some won't! (my 44 Special won't work with 44 Russian, but some do!)

I bought a guy out one time, 700 rounds of reloaded Schofield cowboy ammo for half of what the brass sold for. It works in any 45 Colt revolver with out a rebated chamber (of my 7, 45 Colt revolvers only 1 has a rebated chamber. It is always nice to have options.

Ivan

The shorter ammo will give you a round or two more capacity in a tubular rifle magazine. Beyond that, I see little point in using shorter brass. Back in my CAS days I always used .44 Special in my .44 Mag Super Blackhawks and my .44 Mag Winchester 94 Trapper. Mainly because I could get more rounds in the Trapper.

I can think of two.
1) More positive ejection (cases shorter than the ejector rod)
2) Shorter rounds make for quicker easier reloads with speedloaders.

Just to clarify, you want to shoot 45ACP out of a revolver chambered for 45 Colt, right? I never thought about doing that but I don't shoot long colt that often. Is that something a lot of people do?

I do. Sort of. My 1917 commercial has been reamed to accept 45 Colt.
