Default Nice 357 Mag 158 gr SWC load

Using Handloader Mag., I arrived at a very accurate "strong" mid range 357 Magnum load - approximating 38-44 velocity in 357 Mag cases. This load shoots very, very accurately - sand bag rested from my Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8 inch - put 8 shots in B3 black at 50 ft.

I estimate velocity, based on published data, to be approximately 1,125 fps from a four inch revolver, or 1,200 fps in 6.5 tube.

Components used:

Starline 357 Magnum cases
CCI 500 primers
158 gr SWC Bayou Hi-Tek coated bullet
7.2 grs Power Pistol
Medium firm crimp (3/4 turn Lee FCD)

I use Power Pistol in .38 because it, Acc #7 (And Vihtavuori but too many $$$) because it gets high velocity, but I haven't thought of using it in .357 loads. It would probably be cleaner than low doses of magnum powder.

That issue of Handloader had an excellent article on the 357 magnum.
I really liked the 38-44 Data as this was just what I was looking for to shoot in my 1970 Ruger Blackhawk, with 5 1/2 inch barrel . I even bought 100 brand new , Starline 357 magnum brass just to try these loads in. I'm a range scrounger and usually don't buy new brass.
Been having some excellent results with Accurate Arms #5 in these loads. 6.1 grains is showing promise. At 50 feet 15 shots grouped into a 1 3/8ths inch circle , just one big ragged hole!
I made copies of that article and put them with my reloading manuals....I usually misplace magazines and then can't find the data.

Great stuff gw! I sent another 50 downrange on another great Northern Nevada morning - I'm very satisfied with my loads accuracy and power level. Like you, I shoot for accuracy...nice to have both an accurate load with good speed!
