To short to shoot?
Have some 250 grain WC's I want to load (bullet and round on right).
Comparing it to a 230 grain jacketed round nose (on the left), here are the specs:
Round nose-round--1.228--overall length
bullet--.637--length
WC round--1.106--overall length
WC--.601--length
I shoot both semi's and revolver.
Your thoughts/opinions.

That is a 45 long colt bullet. Most autos wont feed it but ok in a revolver.

How did you come upwith that oal? You are comparing apples to oranges here imo. There really is no too short, you are always working the loads up. The real issue is long bearing surface of a rnfp (not wc) & the extra 20gr of bullet wt, so what powders? I would find some 250-260gr data, Speer #11. Start at minimum load & max oal that fits your gun.
Btw, that bullet is very close to the Le 255gr rnfp. My bullets are closer to 260gr as cast. They load really short, 1.170" oal.

Why would you seat that lead bullet that deep?

A 45 ACP 1911 is supposed to chamber on the mouth the case, with a taper crimp on the case. It is not supposed to chamber with the nose of the bullet touching the rifling.
Cartridge over all length, bullet profile, or leade in the barrel -- the first 0.020" to 0.040" of the rifling is chamfered to remove the "square edge" start of the rifling all affect how the case mouth meets the end of the chamber.

Pull both those bullets. Seated too deeply, and could cause excessive pressure.

Seat the bullet out farther and you should be able to get it to work just fine in a revolver. I have a feeling trying to get that to work in an auto-loader is going to be a losing battle.
As loaded both of the rounds are seated way too deep for me to feel comfortable shooting them.

Without knowing the load, that is just a maybe. Again, no such thing as too short oal if it fits your gun & you work the load up. As i noted, i have shot a sim bullet loaded 1.170", makes 830fps, perfectly safe.

Start with the bullet out....
...in this case. You should start loads for the semi with the bullet out and push it in until you get reliable feeding. (Use a dummy round)
In the revolver you can use any OAL as long as it clears the B/C gap and doesn't hang up on the forcing cone.
I find that SWCs work much better in semis.

So let me answer a few questions:
The round loaded with the round nose overall length is what the Hornady book tells me it should be. I shoots fine in my guns. I took the wad cutter and seated it to the same depth as the round nose, just to see how it would seat, which is the picture above. It is considerable shorter, so I did not know if it would fire in either a semi auto or a revolver.
What should the overall length of a 45 auto be?
The wad cutter has three "channels" in it. Which "channel" should I seat it to?
Thanks.
