148 gr X-TREME wadcutters
Just purchased 1,000 copper plated 148 gr .38 spl wadcutters from X-TREME bullets. Kinda funky looking. Anyone have experience with them.

I've shot several thousand of them, seated flush with Bullseye, HP-38/231 or Accurate No.2. Easy to load, accurate and smoke free for indoor range use. In fact, shot 100 yesterday, been shooting mostly .44s and .45s lately and decided to go back to some .38 fun just because it's been awhile.

Are they copper plated or copper washed? Are they a hollow base WC? I can see the advantage of the less smoke for indoor use, but that depends on how well they shoot.

I like them, my goto for 38. They have a very thick and very durable plating, almost like a jacket. Never seen any copper come off from once I recovered. I use 3gr bullseye or 3.3 gr W213 on them with great results.

I've never used their flush wad cutters but load their 158 grain semi-wad cutters all the time with great results. Also use their 110 grain 9mm round noses and 200 grain .45 semi-wad cutters. No complaints with any of their bullets so far.

Light target loads in 38 Spl work great, mid-range 357 mag loads were not my best idea. I found out that a clean barrel shoots plated bullets trouble free. A dirty barrel, slight leading, rapidly gets a lot worse with a blend of copper plating and lead that is a cleaning challenge. Chinese chore boy dry on an old bore brush did the job but it wasn't a 2 stroke job.

I've shot at least a 1000 of these, originally was seating them to the dimpled crimp groove but now I seat them flush to practice loading for a Model 52 when I someday get one
They worked out well with Bullseye, Titegroup and HP38 for me and WST.
Recently used the new 'Sport Pistol' powder by Alliant @ their 2.7 Max, it is a very light feeling load but clean and accurate for me. The Bullseye at 3.1 has a bit more power.
If you flush seat and contour your crimp to the nice rounded edge of the bullet you have a nice smooth profile and finish.

I've used their RN bullets......
Their RN bullets are top flight and the plating is nearly like a jacket. The price isn't bad for the quality you get.

Ive shot a bunch of them loaded with 3gr Bullseye. Not quite as accurate as Berrys in my guns, they load and shoot great. I've tried loading flush as well as light crimp in groove and found no difference in accuracy

Thanks for the info guys. I have used the 45 and 9mm and their lighter round nose 38. I want to get into loading some wadcutters. Think I will order some to try out!

I'm waiting on my second shipment of them now. I load them with 3.0 bullseye. I have always loaded them to the knurl with just a little sticking out. I crimp just enough to take out the flare. I'm interested in the difference of loading them flush.
The worst part is that it takes 3-5 days for them to say they are shipping and then once you get a shipping notice it's a few days before they actually do. It's not the end of the world.

I have considered bumping the charge of bullseye to 3.5 for a woods load.

There is probably a significant pressure and velocity difference between flush-seated and seated out.

Don't load them too light, they have a lot of barrel contact area, and I have stuck one due to not enough W231. Berry's used to say to use data for 800 FPS. Don't know if they still do. I had a great deal of difficulty getting the bullet unstuck. It was 1 inch from the muzzle of a M14. Took a steel rod and a heavy hammer to clear.
Best,
Rick

I ordered way too many LEAD 148gr from Xtreme..........
it will be a while before I can try their plated 148 BB.
You just need to know that plated can NOT be loaded as slow as the lead bullets.
I would move up a little from a starting load in the manuals to be on the safe side if using "Lead" data.
I tried extended 148 Xtreme 148 bullets but the standard "Flush" seating
always gave me the best results.
Safe loading.

My thread on leading with these slugs was inconclusive. I have been able to cause leading in broach cut barrels with the same loads (though not as badly), which contain 3.0gr Titegroup. In all cases I fired high volume in short time. I managed to get a 6" HP too hot to touch the crane and cylinder. It was about this time that lead smoke began, and leading was discovered. I have not yet retried with cooler burning powder, and will report back when I do.

Kinda funky looking????
What do you mean by this? Xtreme is my main bullet source. I have loaded and shot thousands of rounds of the bullets you referenced, plated 148 gr DEWC as well as several other types and calibers of their bullets. I have always found their bullets to be beautiful, never funky. I think they are a great value.

I suspect he meant they are "unusual looking". Anyone not familiar with that style of bullet (DEWC) might as well.

I seat them flush over 5 gr of Bullseye in 357 cases for 1000fps. They shoot great for me.
