I'm trying to help a friend. He wants to reload his shells for just some skeet shooting with a 7/8 oz load and is having trouble finding any loading info. His hulls are (? Mfg) purple and claimed to be cheddite. He'll be shooting these from a new CZ SxS that fits him to a "T". He has #8 shot but needs which powder works well and the load for 7/8 oz and what wad. He plans to also use Cheddite primers.

Any help?

Lots of 16 Ga. data out there.

Better yet, have him buy a loading manual !!

He needs to know what the base wad is made out of, first.
Then you can look at powders.

Wads: WAA16, Rem SP16, 2 3/4 hull plastic, Green, Unique, Herco for trap loads.
Match the company primer or go with a W209.

16 Ga. skeet......... 8.5 or #9's for a better pattern at skeet ranges will up your scores....
and swing, don't stop that muzzle !!
There is no such thing as a short lead in the game of skeet with a cylinder choke !!

Ballistic Products has every thing you could possibly need, as well as several you don't.

On European shotguns, be sure you get the correct length shotshells / hauls: 2 1/2", 2 9/16" or 2 3/4". I could make a huge difference! Usually they use the same wad.

Back when I was shooting allot of Trap, I used to run 7/8 oz loads over Clays in my 12 ga. Pushed soft, shot clean and crushed targets. I'm betting it would be a decent choice for 16 ga target loads if you can find the right recipe.Remember substitutions of ANY component in a shotgun recipe can be bad Ju Ju!.

No info from me I have loaded 10-12-20-28-410, never 16g.

Well, I actually still reload 16ga skeet, and with the demise of the "compression formed" 16ga Winchester wads and hulls and the Rem 16ga 1 oz wads, I have found the Guilandi 1621 wad works best in the Cheddite hulls (and similar Reifenhauser style hulls) for light 16ga loads. I use #24 MEC powder bushing with Universal. I use 1 oz of #9 to make a pair of Brn sweet 16s cycle, but 7/8oz should be OK in a fixed breech.

I am not a shot gunner but why did the 16 seem to fall away??. It seems it would be about ideal. 12 is pretty darn potent and 20 not so much. 410 is well 410

The Universal loads in the Win Xpert plastic cases are Very low pressure for a 16ga,, great for vintage shotguns. PB is discontinued now I think.

I load 16 using the same wad but with 3/4oz shot and with GreenDot.
I use the minimum load listed for the 20ga 3/4oz load off of Allaints chart.
Been using it in 16 and 20 for probably 20yrs. Great skeet load.

Watch the chamber length in 16's as there are a lot of older and foreign guns with 'short' chambers.
Lot's of back and forth as to what can and cannot be shot in them as far as 2 3/4" loads,, but for the person starting out it's better to stick with what the gun is chambered for.
Shortys can be bought or reloaded easily enough for any of the gauges.

What Ivan said (post 4)......been reloading the 16 for decades, Ballistic Products has everything you need to load any 16 gauge load you want, and loading manuals for the 16 as well. I load everything from clay / skeet loads, bird loads, squirrel loads and slugs in the 16, all my components come from BP.
Back in the 50's, 60's the 16 was THE gauge where I grew up, but it was out shined by the 12 and 20 gauge in the trap, skeet games. There has always been a group of us who were loyal devoted 16 gauge fans, just like the 10mm and 41 mag shooters ( which I also am). The last 20 years has seen a resurgence of sorts for the 16. A run of new guns, availability of reloading components, loading data and factory loads has helped pump life back into the 16.

Lots of good comments above. I load a lot of 16 ga and use Unique as my primary powder.

The 3" 20 did it in for the most part - but it has its admirers and is seeing some resurgency.

Look at the powder maker sites for data, plug in the hull type he has and you'll get the powder type and charge along with the wad to use. BTW, 8s will work just fine for skeet.
