Depends on what you are wanting out of the weapon.

With the smaller case of the 308, I always liked the lighter 150gr pill.
You can use the larger weight for big game or target work, though.

My 308 was just a hunting rifle used for deer, nothing else.

I love 110 gr Sierra Varminters over Reloder 7.
Very accurate, very pleasant recoil.

Hello
You can never go wrong with W748, H-335, AA 2015, TAC or IMR 8208 just to name a few.. IMR 4064 and IMR or H 4895 are always good performers as well, but they are extruded powders. IMR 4064 will be a compressed load, not that there is anything wrong with that... Powder measure throws won't be quite as consistent with extruded powders as they are with ball type powders or extruded powders with very small kernels..

My rifle has a particular liking for TAC and AA 2015, with 150gr bullets but every barrel is different, as we know..

If you haven't been over there, a forum dedicated this sort of thing is the M-14 Forum..

M14 Forum - M14 Forum for M14 M1A Rifles

Not uncommon for these rifles to require a little range work to find out just what they like.. Have fun.

For plinking, 147gr fmj over w748 or aa2520. For a curacy, 168gr over aa2520. I prefer ball powders loading on a progressive, but varget does pretty well in most measures.

For Target Shooting and general Plinking I load 158 grain RNL (Dardas cast .358" dia.) over 3.2 grains of Titegroup. It's a mild load you can shoot in ANY .38 Spl and since I have many older Revolvers I like that.

I can't help you with .308 as I haven't any........
