Just another way of looking at it.

Fine alternate way of looking at it but let me reiterate that this argument is entirely silly if you're still buying powder one pound at a time.
I have found in many years loving this hobby that for one's own sanity, there comes a time where you must place a cap on considering the fiscal angle -- I say this simply because every component that I purchase to make ammo is cheaper by volume.
If you can't break off from the "SAVINGS!" angle eventually, you start making purchases that make you question your true goals. If I remember correctly.... ummm, I want to say that ~$1,700 was my high water mark on a single bulk bullet purchase.
"But but but they are cheaper in bulk!" is all well and good but you have to find a limit for yourself. Not always so easy.

Don't mean to say that my load recipes are any better than 2.7/2.8 Bullseye(I think you're under a very dark cloud if your .38 spl doesn't group with it!)but like many others, during the 2 or 3 years the Great Powder Drought lasted,I came upon a couple of bargains where 700X was the main item;long story short and I am now the owner of 17 # of it.And I love it.2.6gr will propel a 148gr WC in verrrry tight groups. As for recoil,..???can we speak of any whichever target load is being used?We are really splitting hair here.
I know, guys complain that it doesn't meeter well but in both my Dillons(300RL and Square Deal B)they will not vary anymore than 0.1gr when I check(normally and when not too humid, that is +0.1gr when it gets very low in the reservoir).I am just being carefull to keep the level quite constant in my powder measure.
I think that when you get into the spectrum of very quick burners(Bullseye,Promo,Red Dot,700X,Titegroup etc),we shall always get from good to excellent groups, all else being equal.Try and adopt the one you feel best about. And above all, have fun!Life is so short.

I approach economy a little differently myself.
I buy bullets a couple of thousand at a time, but I buy them on sale or with a promo code etc. Bottom line I seldom pay more than about 8 cents per for 44 or 45 cal or a nickle apiece for 9mm or 38/357 slugs.
I buy most of my powder in pound containers, but haven't paid more than around $16-$17 a pound for any I've bought. I buy sealed containers at gun shows, at a couple of gun shops that take consignments, or off the local gun board. I've only managed to accumulate around 35 pounds worth that way...

Ransom rest tested many other powders as well. ACC # 2

I like 5.2 grains of Unique for punching paper with my .38s. Sounds boring, but I use Unique for most of my revolver cartridge reloads; however, I often use Trail Boss and lil gun as alternatives for the .500.

I'd stick with the Bullseye for the target loads . I don't know of anything that really works any better .

I used Bullseye until I found American Select. Same performance, less smut. If you don't mind the cleanup Bullseye is your powder. If you want something just as good but cleaner try a pound of American Select. I put Bullseye, Tightgroup, AS and Clays in the same group. All good, they all work just fine.

My standard 38 Spl load using 158 gr lead was 3.5 grs of Bullseye. I only load 158 gr lead 38 Spl +P using Power Pistol nowadays because I like a little more power out here in high desert country.

Why change what works? If you listen to 5 people you will get 6 different responses. Go by your own experience.
I have loaded with BE for 40 years now, have no intentions on changing. If there were no BE to be had, I could switch to ww231 or Red Dot.
