A lot of misinfo on safety & quality, ss press vs good progressive. Plenty of guns have been ruined by guys loading on ss presses, plenty more on progressives. It is easy to make mistakes on either. As noted, not all are suited for reloading. it is not rocket science but does require you to pay attention to details & requires more patience than some can give. That actually makes the progressive a bit safer as you are spending 1/4 of the time in the reloading process. So you can give 110% attention to the details.
Anyone can learn on a good progressive that is running properly. As noted, use it as an inverted turret & load one round at a time until you have figure the process & machine out. Anyone getting into reloading to supply 1000rds a month, really can use a progressive. I teach on ss presses because it is about the die setup. Not much to setup on a progressive once the dies are in place & adjusted. It becomes a handle pulling, bullet & case feeding exercise. So if you can handle loading & unloading your gun safely, you can handle reloading on a progressive. A ss press has a place but it is NOT for 500rds a week. One-two hours vs 6-7, no contest.

Taking time to understand each operation on a ss is an asset that will be usefull when he moves to a progressive. And besides, having a ss nearby is always usefull.
I've got a couple of progressives but I wouldn't do without my Rockchucker! It's still used for a few usefull tasks to perform now and then.

I was wondering when somebody would throw a turret press into the mix
I don't know if a turret can save any handle pumping??

Honestly?
I could produce the volume being discussed, depending on the cartridge, with my trusty turret. I'll frequently produce 500-600 rounds over a couple days when I'm bored.
I wouldn't recommend it as a weekly regimen. I think you'd be looking at a minimum of 7-8 hours a week, including case prep, but not counting press and bench maintenance. To say nothing of the shoulder ache you'd develop pulling the lever.

Brian, your bio doesn't mention where you are located, you will probably find there is a member here that's in your area. Most folks here would be happy to let you see their set up and even help you get started. Very friendly folks here, just an idea.

If your just going to reload one cartridge 44 mag it will be expensive to load... more so then just buying factory rounds by the time you buy a reloader powder primers bullets ect you will invest more the a couple hundred dollars
I cant justify that cost for one round...I reload for 12 different rounds so my cost savings is better but not for one round mite want to rethink this
I started by having a friend that already reloaded since I only wanted to reload for 300 mag i bought the die kit and he let me use his equipment untill I got to 5 different rounds then with his teaching and equipment use it was time to get my own reloader and supplys because I could justify the cost

The idea you can't learn on a progressive or load the same quality ammo is a pretty outdated. Yes I am old enough to remember when Dillon came out with their first progressive & everyone else since has been playing catch up. Not everyone needs a progressive, but 500rds a week? The savoring part is gone at that point.

This is something I repeatedly tell my child..."when you don't agree with someone, it doesn't make them wrong....it simply means you have a different opinion than the other person. Two people can have different opinions, or a different approach to an idea...and both be right".
