Default Powder:Bass Pro vs Cabela's

The purchase by Bass Pro of Cabela's for 4 Billion is complete and now Cabela's is owned by Bass Pro.

Two days ago I stopped by my local Bass Pro in Round Rock TX to fill in with a few hundred primers until I can locate a quantity at a reasonable price of about $20/1000.

This is what I found at Bass Pro:

Alliant 2400 = $40/lb
Alliant Bullseye = $35/lb
Alliant Unique = $34/lb
Alliant Power Pistol = $30/lb
Alliant Red Dot = $34/lb
Wincester 231 = $33/lb

Winchester Primers = $5.20/100
Remington Primers = $4.80/100
CCI Primers = $4.29/100
Federal GM LPP = $5.20/100

Bass Pro does not have primers in bulk of 1000 or more

I left the store without a purchase.

Two weeks ago while at Cabela's in Lubbock TX I purchased
1lb 2400 = $26
1lb BE = $25
1lb Unique =$26
1000 Federal LPMP $32
1000 Federal SPMP $33

Today I bought 6lbs of Bullseye in a face to face $15/lb and 5000 Winchester SPP $20/1000

Only time will tell how the Cabela's purchase will play out in prices to consumers.

Sorry about that.

BASS is privately owned, Cabela's has stock holders - it will be interesting to see how that all meshed together

Bass Pro prices near me are nowhere near that high, most powders being in the $25/lb range.

Bass Pro is always high here. When I need components I go to our local reloading store, Jerry's. He is always at or below BP and carries a large stock of powder, primers, bullets, dies and expert advice on reloading. Most of my shooting buddies and gun club members do most of their reloading business with Jerry. He and his store are great assets to us.

I have always found both stores to be great for "showrooming". That said, I have often bought online from Cabela's when they had shotgun ammo on sale with free shipping. Reloading components I go through my club who uses Gamaliel. Since they targets by the truckload from them, our stuff get put on the truck for hazmat or extra shipping costs. MUCH better than trying to find and buy locally.

When Sporstmen's Warehouse had shot for 40 bucks a bag, BP was 50. That was all I needed to know, never been back.

Default BPS vs Cabela's

The BPS near Chicago is at least 20% higher than the local Cabela's on powder. Other reloading supplies are higher too but not as much. I always thought Cabela's clothes were a little better than BPS's. I hope BPS doesn't bring Cabela's quality down a level. Willyboy

In my area, I find both of them to have limited selection and high prices on reloading components. Fortunately, I keep a couple of years worth (of everything) around so am never in "need" enough to pay those prices. I'd rather place my orders with the little guys anyway.

The one and only time I've gone to the nearest BP (by Baton Rouge) was during the last Great Powder Shortage a few years ago. I had ordered some powder online at outrageous pricing, but it was available and went there to pick it up. Needless to say, I haven't been back.

BTW, the local Academy in Lafayette, LA now has some reloading supplies in stock nowadays. I really didn't check out the price on bullets or primers, but they had half decent pricing on the powders they had in stock. The 2 that stick in my mind are CFE-P and Longshot and both were priced at $26 a lb.

Bass Pro near me does not carry powder. Cabelas has a limited supply with occaisional good prices on sales, about the same quantity as the Big R farm supply store. Sportsmans Warehouse usually has a pretty varied stock though at prices somewhat more than I would like to pay compared to online prices.

That is no longer true. Bass Pro Shop bought Cabela's for 5.5 Billion Dollars so get ready for the prices to equalize. BP shop couldn't compete with Cabela's so they bought them!

That's one of the few down sides to capitalism.
Greed wins every time.

I practically live in the Fort Worth Cabela's.
I wouldn't be caught dead in a Bass Pro.

We'll see.........

I've had a Cabelas credit card for some time. Use it for gas and most other stuff I put on a card. Pay it off every month. I've bought some gun stuff from them, but mainly go there once a year to cash in my points along with a gift card or two that I have. The main reason I have used their card is the couple of times I had to call and use the credit card customer service. I spoke to ladies in Lincoln Nebraska, not southern Asia and had no problem understanding them or they, understanding my problem. They actually spoke with me and I could tell they weren't trying to read an answer off a computer screen. If the company that bought the credit card side of the business changes this, I'm gone.

I buy some items in the local Cabela's(Billings Mt 80 miles) but only when they have good sales and I have cash discount cards. Just got one yesterday good for 20% on a 100 bucks or more... But usually their prices are much higher than I would like to pay. But Berry's bullets are on sale 20% off right now so I will get what I might need. My limited experience with Bass Pro back in Md when I lived there was not too helpful. Very little in the line of reloading and prices were much too high. They did give firefighter/police/military discounts though. I think you will see prices ranging higher in Cabela's now..Gotta pay for that acquisition ya know!

Default Bass Pro's prices....

Bass Pro's prices are pretty outrageous. There isn't a powder shortage going on right now,

PS I don't like either place. Either they have a poor stock or the prices are high, take your pick. Also, these stores don't seem to make it around here. Bass Pro never opened and Gander Mountain pulled out.

I've never remember buying any reloading supplys from any of those huge box sportsman stores. Just always priced out of sight.
Nice for lookin' at all the stuff and I do admit to going thru the used guns.

There are other places to buy at cheaper prices around me,,but I relalize others don't always have that option.
I also always scrounge odd lots and boxes of reloading 'stuff' when I see it on tables at the shows that I frequent. There can be some great deals in that but you can't be too choosey,,!

...$30 & $40 a pound for powder,,no way

An ad on the state gun trader a few days ago in Dallas had an 8lb jug of Bullseye for $75 and 9 x 1lb at $10 ea.

It was all sold within minutes od the ad being posted.

I offered to buy it all as soon as I spotted the ad but I was minutes too late.I would have made the 3+ hour drive for the powder and coated 44cal bullets/400 new Hornady 44mag cases in another deal.

I did get the 44cal bullets and cases but they were shipped.

If any of you know where to find small pistol primers for $20/1000, I would love to know.

Considering I have a wholesale reloading distributor local to me who sells to the public and the cost for 1K brick of Winchester primers was $28 the last time I got.

$20 would be awesome!

Cabelas was selling S&B primers for $20/1000 but now the price is $22/1000 except for small pistol that they never seem to sale at the $20/$22 price of the other 3.I bought some small rifle that I use in place of small pistol.

The S&B primers are a high quality primer made in the Czech Republic. In my reloads they all go bang and shoot just as well as CCI,Remington and Winchester.

Ordering on line the Hazmat fee is the deal breaker.

The best deals are from individuals lowering inventory or getting out of reloading.

Like any retailer, both Bass Pro and Cabela's set their prices based on "what the market will bear", so comparing prices at a store in very wealthy Round Rock to less wealthy Lubbock isn't going to be very informative.

But, yes, in zip codes with six-figure median incomes, Bass Pro charges around $40 a pound for powder. I've seen it in San Antonio, Round Rock, and Grapevine. In Little Rock, the prices were about $5 a pound less.

Why?

Places like Powder Valley and Midsouth Shooter Supply have most domestic brands of powders in the range of $20-25 per pound. Buy ten pounds and the hazmat fee adds around $2 a pound and that's still way cheaper than what you found at Bass Pro and about the same as you found at Cabela's.

And at either Bass Pro or Cabela's you would have had to add on sales tax, so at about 8 to 10 pounds the hazmat fee adds nothing to your unit cost.

And to add to that, one hazmat fee covers something like 50 lbs of primers and powder, so if you wait and order a large volume you cut the cost of the hazmat fee into many other items and lowers the per pound/per 1k primers considerably.

A 1lb can of BE,Unique,2400,Power Pistol for $20 face to face beats any on line deal.

There's plenty out there if you take the time to look.

My back up source is Cedar Hill Arms that's just down the road plus at most local gun shows and very nice people.

Cabela's and Bass Pro will continue to be operated as two different stores, independently of each other.

They will just be owned by the same people, as are many "competing" business's in America.

Default Cabela's and Bass Pro

I like both Cabela's and Bass Pro.
Just like any shopping I do, I just
watch prices.

I really like Cabela's Website, the
best out there, other businesses
need to take note.

I will have to say Cabela's and Local
Gun Shops get most of my business.

Time will tell if Cabela's changes.

I've had $10 off $25 coupons before from BPS and wound up leaving the store without purchasing anything. Even at $25, most of their stuff is more than $10 overpriced.

Same thing happened at a Grand Opening of Dicks. $10 off $25. Left the store without purchasing anything.

Sportsmans Warehouse is one of the few big box sporting goods stores that has reasonable reloading supply prices. Not as good as mail order, but no shipping costs and no hazmat. Plus they didn't jack up prices during the shortages like some of the local small stores did.

Thanks for the suggestions on primers.

Never tried S&B, only used Winchester, but Winchester always seemed to be the cheapest of all the brands, even at the wholesaler. Ordering online is what kills the price for me, as I don't buy large quantities enough to off-set the hazmat. If I could find a cheaper price, I would certainly try another brand.

I agree local deals with people reducing inventory is the way to go. Haven't been checking though as I'm not ready to purchase anything. Although, I did post a local ad recently asking if anyone wanted to trade a brick of WSP for a brick of WLP, as I don't shoot much big bore anymore. Didn't get any responses though.

As an aside, at that wholesale distributor, almost any type of powder is $20 or less for 1#. If you buy the 8# jug of Bullseye, it's $128, and 8#s of 2400 is $131.

You can buy 22lr ammo there for as low as 525/$19.99 too. Definitely nice to have this local business, and have them sell to the public, because every time I'm there they have pallets of products ready to deliver to all the local gun shops that sell reloading products.

Overly ambitious expansion hurt Gander and Cabela's; they got saddled with too much debt.

Here in Pensacola I was amazed at how hardly any store carries reloading supplies, pretty much have to wait for the gun shows to buy primers and powder or order on line and pay hazmat fees. I tried this week to buy tumbling media, I couldn't find anyone that carries it here including Walmart. Bought 10 pounds on Amazon but it will take 4 weeks to ship. Always like to keep a decent stock of powder and primers and fortunately I'm not in a bind yet.
