Default Hoarding Help

When it comes to reloading, I think we all have a touch of hoarding syndrome. My wife and I will soon be relocating to another state. I have boxes of shells I'll never use, bullets in Calibers for which I no longer own rifles. Lots of large rifle primers I don't need as I no longer need to load rifle ammo, many canisters of IMR powders. Reloading dies, even factory ammo. It goes on and on.

I've tried selling some of it (except the open canisters) and find it isn't worth the effort to pack the stuff and ship it off. I'm open to any ideas on how to dispose of enough surplus stuff to fill a foot locker or two.

Large rifle primers can be used in 460Mag & 500Mag so maybe you need to look at the problem from different angle On more serious note I guess sale locally will be most effective (craigslist, armslist)

Put a sign up at the club where you frequent or trade/sell/give the goodies away to shooting buddies. Your burden will be quickly lightened.

We sometimes have people drop stuff off at our gun club . They leave a "free" sign and agree to pick up anything that isn't taken.( BE sure to check with the club first). Usually some other hoarder will grab it all . Even stuff they have no use for because "someday, they just might reload in XYZ caliber." Been There - Done that.

List out all that you want to discard. Charge $25 ($50) or whatever postage is required - include $20 for your time and sell everything to one person. If someone has to pay even a nominal amount at least it means he or she legitimately wants it. Filters out the indiscriminate “If it’s free it’s for me” crowd. Good deed done.

Get a table at a gun show and put reasonable prices on your stuff. It will sell...

Ranges & gun clubs will move your stuff. I karma stuff at my club often. I am not a hoarder, prefer the term being prepared. The stuff doesn't go bad, & ya just never know what you might be shooting next year.

Current primer prices seem to be about three cents each. A lot of powders are $25 a pound. I can't imagine you could not find someone interested in the stuff at 1/2 to 2/3 retail price. You are right about the hoarding. Most of us get concerned about shortages and being unable to obtain componants so we load up.

Great input suggestions above. Just glad I'm not in your situation as it would kill me to get rid of what I could and have to chuck the rest in the garbage can. I hope it doesn't come to that for you. BTW hope you have a smooth relocation. Having retired from the Navy after 22 years and having to relocate wife/kids every 3-4 years, I don't envy you.

Where in L.I.? You near Lindenhurst?

Post a list of all your surplus with prices in the for sale forum.

Do you have any auctions near you that have gun/Sporting goods auctions? We see loads of powder, primers, reloads, brass, equipment, etc at auctions. I'm always surprised at how much they bring.

They are not as common THERE as other places. + One for the local ranges, bulletin boards at gun shops, if able. Internet reloading sites & try for someone nearby. You would know the current laws THERE NOW, better than me regarding sales/gifting of powders/primers etc if any.

I am in the other boat - we moved and I left behind items - for me, mostly bulky tools (riding lawnmower, uhhgg), some power tools - things I now have to replace. So, looking in Craigslist, waiting for spring for auctions and yard sales etc

I believe this is the best route to go. If I saw an add like the above, I would be interested.

Good luck.

One of my friends was facing the same problem when he had to move to England(gun laws are so harsh over there!).
He contacted a retail store and offered everything(guns long and short, components and reloading equipment). He got a good price for the stuff and didn't have to spend a few days or weeks to wait everything to clear out.

A garage sale, publicized at local shooting clubs beforehand, should generate considerable interest.

If you have friends (or business associates) that reload, my experience has always been that you can get a tremendous amount of goodwill with a box of brass or a box of bullets out of all proportion to its value.

Often you have a friend who is retired without a bunch of money. If you don't need the money let him find a good home for it. He may swap mor use every bit or help out a new guy.
Good luck
