I want to start loading .45AR on my Dillon 550. The Dillon website shows two crimp dies in 45 caliber . One is for .45acp and the other is for .45Colt . Gonna shoot them in my 625-3 .45acp .
So which one for the .45AR ?

.45 ACP. It's been decades, but so far as I recall, I used the same .45 ACP dies with no changes in adjustment to load .45 AR.

Back in the early 80's when I bought my RL450. I bought every shell plate except 45 AR and 8mm Label. I've never owned more than 50 AR brass. When I loaded with 1960's vintage Lyman All American dies, they only came with roll crimp dies, and you had to be careful to not overcrimp for 1911's. So they are out there, but I use a taper crimp in my 1917 and 625 with full moon clips.

If you have a roll crimp die and a taper crimp die, both are worth trying. I get slightly better accuracy with taper crimp in the Auto Rim, but that may not always hold true for other guns and handloads.

I have never needed nor used a crimp die for either .45 ACP or .45 AR.

If you're loading bullets without a cannelure use a taper crimp die.

If your bullets have a cannelure use a roll crimp die if you're shooting +P loads in a lightweight model revolver or if you're using slow powder that would benefit from a roll crimp.

I use Redding's Profile Crimp (a modified roll crimp) but I don't know if it'll work in your Dillon.

LEE's 45acp Factory Crimp Die (90864) is perfect for both 45AR and 45acp, at least in my non-Dillon presses...

This reminded me of something I've posted before:

I have the Lee 4 die FactoryCrimpDie sets in 45ACP (taper crimp) & 45 Colt (roll crimp). When I load some 45AR cases & bullets with cannelures, I remove the crimping insert from the Colt FCD & substitute it in the ACP FCD, along with a spacer (I use a copper bushing, ~0.5" long by ~0.5" wide, as the Colt insert is shorter than the ACP's) to crimp them. Conversely, if I load some 45 Colt cases with bullets w/o cannelures (light to moderate loads) I do the substitution swap the other way.

If you have the ACP FCD set but don't have the Colt FCD set, I read you can buy the 45 Colt's FCD crimp insert, along with the spacer, from LEE for a nominal fee, by calling & asking. That way you keep the FCD features, post-sizing & easy adjustments. The post-sizer on the FCDs (Colt & ACP) are not the same diameter, with the Colt being larger by several thousands. This is one reason I don't interchange them as a complete unit, but swap the crimping insert only, besides the overall die length difference.

I got the old Lyman All American .45 acp die set and roll crimp all of my AR loads . Never loaded jacketed in the AR just cast lead in 200-255 grain SWC .

Range brass is all over the place after you size it. Some of it is worn out and I can tell that when I size it. I just throw those away. But some are marginal and can be used if I taper crimp a little. Maybe one more loading.

I use a LFCD I know it's a crutch but all of my ammo feeds and cycles.

If I only loaded for one pistol I could probably get by without crimping. I shoot the same ammo in 3 1911's.

One of my favorite revolvers of all time is my 625-8 JM Special. I have shot it thousands of times. I use home cast bullets almost entirely.

I use the Lee Factory crimp die for .45 ACP. it comes with a taper crimp die and is perfect for bullets without a crimp groove. I taper crimp to a case mouth diameter of .470”. I load the same for both ACP and Autp Rim cases.

When I load heavy loads for the .45 Auto Rim using the Lyman 452424 (250 gr. Keith) it requires a roll crimp. I called Lee Precision direct and ordered out a roll crimp insert with the required spacer. I think it cost about $7.50. It works perfectly. It is easily switched without tools.

I load mostly using my Dillon 550’s.

As an aside:
I load the ACP cases adjusted so they work prooerly in my 1911’s. They work perfectly in the revolvers, also.

Crimp dies do not hold the cases in the press, shell plates do. Get the shell plate for the Auto Rim cases. Crimp die should be the .45 ACP.

I shoot only .45 ACP in my 1937 and 1950 they will function fine without a roll crimp but I do use one when I'm loading cast bullets. The only reason I roll crimp them is so they feed more easily into the chambers with the crimp and the mood clips. I do have to keep the rounds segregated from my auto rounds because they would probably seat to deeply and cause excessive head space.
