Default 9mm Competition

Anyone shooting a 9mm in center fire competition? Reloading? What projectiles are you using?

Thanks, Bob

I am not currently; however, a few years ago I was shooting 124 gr rn, over titegroup. Folks shooting production division in USPSA/IPSC 98% of them shoot 9mm. The 9 is also popular in IDPA.

I am currently running a 9mm in IDPA. I prefer 145-150gr bullets at the min PF, about 860fps. It is pretty soft shooting, even in a subcompact 9mm.

If you're talking Bullseye, the subject has come up on Bullseye-L quite a bit. I don't know a ton about it because most of it revolves around JHPs, and I'm too cheap to shoot them.

I have been shooting a 9mm in IPSC Classic division for the past few months.

Projectile of choice is a 124 gn bullet which can easily make the 125 PF level with some "safety room".

Last month I loaded some plated truncated cone flat points for a level III comp instead of the PRN I usually shoot and had run out of. Big mistake as they tended to misfeed for the first 2 or 3 rounds in the mag (10 round mags). The 124 gn PRN have never jammed like this.

I had been loading 5.5 gn of the old Winchester Power Pistol, sold here under a local label, which worked okay but there would be regular misses/wild shots. Initially I put this down to my shooting, but then I ran a comparison with 4.2 gn Tightgroup. The wild/missed shots ended (as long as I did my part) and overall group size halved. I have not chronographed this load as yet but it feels just a little light, so the next batch (which will be chronographed) will be 4.4 gn.

I am going back to .45 ACP for a comp next weekend, and will probably stick with his calibre for most of my competition shooting. But the 9 will get regular outings.

Not competitively, but I shoot a 124gn Nosler JHP over 800X and average 1225fps, plenty good for minor in all classes. With a 147gn XTP, VV states a max load of 3N38 will make major at 1208fps.

I have done extensive Ransom Rest testing of 9mm ammo and guns at 50 yards. Here are my top finds in order of accuracy.
Hornady 115gr XTP
Hornady 124gr XTP
Hornady 121gr HAP (old bullet i don't think they make anymore)
Hornady 115gr HAP / Zero 115gr Conical jhp
hornady 147gr XTP
powder
VV330 best
VV320 2nd
WSF 3rd
Yes I shoot a 9MM for centerfire. As a matter of fact the first year at Camp Perry that they had 2 man teams my partner and I won the 2 Man Centerfire Team National Championship with my Rock River Arms 9mm 1911. JP

First, is your accuracy list ascending, with the 147XTP being the best?
Second, that N330 favorite is with which bullet?

I find this interesting as I'm on a mission to find an accurate 9mm load, fairly economically, preferably with only moderate velocity/recoil. So far, I've looked at a dozen bullets and more than a dozen powders at 50 feet and homed in on a 124JHP. Powders still in the hunt are VV320, Power Pistol, AA5 and Win Autocomp. VVN310 is my 45 powder, but I haven't tried 330. In the coming weeks I'll be Ransom Rest testing with a Colt GCT at 50 yards.

124 gr x-treme plated with 4.7 gr W231 in IDPA...something like 1000 fps. Never had a problem and love shooting these.

No it is not ascending. 115gr xtp were best. The best powder across the board was the VV330.
5.0 gr VV330 for the 115 and 121 gr
4.8 gr for the 124 gr
4.2 gr for the 147 gr

Default My most accurate 9mm....

I'm not in competition, but I have a load that is uncannily accurate. 147 gr SWC with a very light charge of Acc #7. I had a sub-minimal load that would still operate the action and felt like I could have gone down a little more if I thought it necessary.

If you did it with a Ransom Rest, it's not to bragging to share your results.

Can you tell us what group size you achieved with the 115XTP and N330 at 50 yards?

I used several Rock River Arms 1911's in 9mm. Along with Tony Kidd and David Sams Custom Beretta's and S&W PPC9's. I shoot both PPC and Bullseye. With the Bullseye guns I shot 10 rd groups. The PPC guns I shot 24 round groups. Why the different amount of shots? In Bullseye it's 10rds per target at 50yds and in PPC it's 24 rds per target at 50 yds.
1911's 10 shot groups were .9" to 1.1"
1911's 24 shot groups were 1.1" to 1.25"
Beretta's 10 shot groups were 1.25" to 1.65" Kidd was better than the Sam's every time. Both were bullseye guns, only 10rd groups.
PPC9's were 5" and 6" all 24 shot groups. Both rate's of twist were tested.
With the first rate of twist (older run of guns) were 2.25" to 2.5". The older PPC9's liked the 147 gr XTP better 1.75" at 50yds.
The newer PPC9's rifling liked the 115gr better . All were around 1.7" to 1.9". jp

Thanks for that!

I've got a couple of bone stock 1911's I can disassemble with bare fingertips. The .45 does 2" & 2.25" with 2 different powders for 10 shots @50yd. If I can get the 9mm to cut 2" I'll be a happy camper. If I can't get there with one of the half-dozen powders I want to use, I'll get some N340.

My only competitive shooting is on 10" (minimum) steel plates at 35 yd and no power factor; not a high bar for accuracy.

I use 147gr. bullets. Started off with Bear Creek moly coated, but recently moved to Bayou Bullets. Very happy with results and cost.

I use my own cast 125gr TC on top of a light charge of 231.My bullet moulds are either Saeco 4 banger or Magma bevel base for my Master Caster.
I used to say that you can't get real accuracy out of a 9mm.I bought and sold 2 Sigs,2 Rugers and a few others. But my S&W 539 was a lot better and my actual Shadow 1 beats my Gold Cup and is hot on the heels of my model 14.
I guess I spoke too quickly.

I have nowhere near the 25/50 yard time-rounds as PPCSHOOTER but I have had great accuracy at 25 yards with:

Hornady 115 XTP/HAP
Power Pistol 6.0-6.2
1x Fired WIN Brass [What I have most of]
WIN SPP

^ I believe this is also a well-used combo, besides the brass for 50 yds., of many as well as what David Sam uses to test his builds.

I shoot a lot of USPSA with a standard 1st gen. 9mm M&P and been doing it for years. I will say this much; There is no magic bullet.

I reload all of my ammo and I've tried so many different brands and reload data and I came to the conclusion that 124 grain FMJ gives the best balance of power factor, accuracy and function in my M&P.

I really like the Hornady 124gr. FMJ with 4.0gr Titegroup and a COL of 1.15".

Berry's bullets come in a close 2nd. Xtreme bullets are very good too. Just load them to specs shown in the latest Speer or Hornady manuals.
