Replicating the old Winchester 185gr FMJSWC target load
Hello! Does anyone here have any first hand experience duplicating/replicating the old Winchester 185gr FMJSWC target load with the Speer TMJ bullets?
If so, how did this load tend to shoot? I tend to lean towards WW231 and Bullseye for my handgun target loads. Can anyone suggest a good starting point with these bullets with either powder? I am looking to develop a target load for the COM matches at Camp Perry, and lead bullet loads are not permitted for these matches.
Thanks for your advice!

I have read that the MC uses vv310 or WST as their powder of choice . You might be able to do some research to verify . Hope this helps , Paul

I used to use 4.0 of 452AA and later the same charge of WST. That might be a bit light for outdoors at 50-yards but it worked well for my indoor 25-yards shooting. Bumping it a couple tenths “might” be better outdoors. I still have a small supply of the old jacketed SWCs that I am hoarding for a rainy day, I guess. I am not good enough to tell much difference between them and cast H&G #68s, which is about all I shoot anymore.

Two friends of mine used to buy their 45 Bullseye guns from James Clark 30+ years ago and he told them that 5 gr. of BE was what he used. I still have a few boxes of 185 button nose jacketed left. They would take their hand loads to his shop to be tested until they got their own setup. Rib guns were the thing back then.
